What to do with 1.5 year old on a 6+ hour drive? Drug her with Nyquil?

Haha - j/k I'm going to Tampa in the morning with my 20 month old neice as my only passenger. 6 LONG hours with her in the backseat of my car doens't sound fun, and I have a feeling there's going to be lots of screaming and mashing of teeth (well, the few she has).

What can I do to make the trip go a smooth as possible? I've never watched her for more than a few hours, but being confined in a car seat is totally something else........

Is she comfortable with you? Traveling with a child can be difficult but you can multiply that times ten if the child isn't comfortable with you. Are her parents going to be along? If so then don't worry about it.

it's a car, she's a child, she will fall asleep for 90% of the trip. just make sure she has some little toys to help knock herself out with.

There used to be these things that were a styrofoam-stuffed pillow on one side and a hard board (desk) on the other. Great for kids in the car - could sleep on one side and use the other as a platform for coloring.

Does she like the wiggles? If you can stand it you can play a Wiggles CD when she gets restless.

Learn to sing some children's songs. In the morning, turn on public TV and watch a bit of Barney. You'll then know enough songs to sing to her on the drive.

Yeah, but she'll be in the back seat, alone.....It'll just be me and the kid.

She'll sleep most of the time. My daughter is 24 months and we just drove 5 hrs today; She slept 4 1/2 of them.

When we lived in Atlanta we made many 12 hour drives to Michigan. Our daughter was between 1 and 2 for those trips. She was awake for most of the time, damn kid just wouldn't sleep (and I refuse to drug my daughter for something like that). We just had to make plenty of stops so she didn't get pissed off sitting there the whole time. Please don't try and make the trip in one shot, let her out at least once to stretch her wobbly legs.

6 hours? I suggest waiting until naptime to leave. Or travel at night when she sleeps. Let her sleep the first hour or so and when she wakes up stop and feed her and change her. You will need to entertain her after you get her back in the car so I would suggest singing with her or some sort of music. Keep a bottle or two handy. Interacting with her is key. If you ignore her she will only get upset.

Just out of curiousity where are her parents? Why are they letting you travel 6+ hours alone with their child? I have a 2.5 year old and he's never traveled with anyone other than his Mom or I.

Whatever you do, don't listen to the idiots suggesting drugs.
