Haha, I meant if you're stoppering/holding wine, you aren't drinking it! It's madness, drink that stuff up and enjoy it.

We've got two wine coolers, neither of which are ever plugged in because we don't keep wine in the house for more than a day or three before it's gone. Too tasty to hold onto!

You just don't buy enough wine at one time my friend!

I was that way for a while (though wine was kinda my gateway into alcohol in general, aside from a few good beers), but had, very seriously, a life-changing glass of Brunello a few years back that's had me hooked ever since. I love/appreciate all alcohols though, I'd never place one over another, too much good to spread around.

Exactly how it went for me too and I couldn't agree more with your second sentence. I am a 5th generation drunk!

Now your problems have been doubled. I don't think you will be able to return the wine either.
I don't mind that wine (2.5 buck chuck, cabernet from Trader Joe's, which I buy by the case when I get low). In fact, I often very much enjoy it. But I never drink more than, say, 5oz at a time. I used to feel sheepish about it but one day my quite well to do brother served it up to me at his fabulous house and I figured I shouldn't feel bad about it anymore. I just don't know any better. I've never paid more than maybe $6 for a bottle of wine. I've had better wine at parties (and maybe at restaurants), for sure, but TBH, I've never had the notion that they are worth the premium people are paying for them. Of course, $300 to a very wealthy man is a nominal sum to pay for a bottle of wine, but to me it's pure folly.
Just add it to your fruit smoothies?
Yeah, I guess. I do make those sometimes, any time I want.

You shouldn't waste piss either and that can be drank like twice.

I don’t waste my piss, I actually save it to water my plant. I also used my shit as fertilizer. I donate all my semen to sperm bank after I masturbate. I believe waste of any resources is a grave sin.
Life can become very difficult if you get too damn hard headed.

Believe it or not, I still haven't opened either of the 1.75L bottles of cheap-ass Jose Cuervo. So, I notice a guy at Costco a month ago buying on sale ($2.50 rebate or something) a bottle of margarita mix. I ask him if it's good and he assures me it really is. I go, oh boy, here's my chance, I'll get a discount on stuff I can add my tequila to, I'll make margaritas!. But turns out this has alcohol in it already, drat! I can't return it because of that fact!!! Nuts. I call Costco yesterday and they tell me they do stock non-alcohol containing margarita mix (didn't see it there a couple weeks ago, but yesterday was told they have 2x 1.75L for $6.99), so I figure to buy some next week.

A guy said I could add tequila to lemonade (he was dispensing free lemonade samples at Costco). I haven't tried that yet. I really am very casual when it comes to alcohol. I drank maybe 8oz 2.5 buck chuck cabernet this week at dinner time, total.

So, I was at Costco almost a year ago I guess and a cosmic ray hit me right in the cerebral cortex. What actually happened, BION (believe it or not), was a little old lady asked me to help her get some in her cart. Yeah, no lie. So, I take a look and see they have a special where if you buy 2 bottles of this stuff (Jose Cuervo Especial), I guess it was 1.5 liter bottles, you get this discount. I plop 2 of them in my cart.

I get home and do some online research and see that what I bought is considered crud. No one who knows jack about tequila, who appreciates it, would buy this stuff. I bring it back next time I hit Costco and get the lowdown: "It's illegal in California to return alcoholic beverages." So, now they are just sitting in my house unopened. I have a bottle of probably the same stuff sitting in my liquor cabinet with maybe 3 ounces in it, it's been there probably 15 years. I am not much of a drinker (!), and just never have an idea to use tequila. A friend of mine turned me onto some gourmet stuff at his place a few years ago, but that was a different animal entirely, I discovered, when I did my online research.

What would you do with this Jose Cuervo cheap stuff? Is it possible to make passable margaritas out of this stuff? Donate it? Pour it down the drain? What would you do?
Cheap booze is best used in mixed drinks

Not to be pedantic, and you may know better, but spirits don't age in the bottle. If you put 3yr whisky in a bottle, and open it 100 years later, it'll still be 3yr whisky. *When it gets bottled, time is frozen.

*For something better than Cuervo, you'd also want to decant it into a smaller bottle as you drink it. Air will negatively affect the flavor of spirits. IOW, as the level goes down, the spirits will degrade over time. I'd only decant something I drink a glass or two of per year, and cost a small fortune.
This is worth repeating (so quoted). I drink so seldom, I figure I should do this. For example, I have some Glenlivet single malt scotch I rarely touch. I have Jack Daniels Black Label, I have expensive liqueurs. I probably wouldn't even know they are degrading in the bottles with all that air in them, what a travesty! Ah, life has its problems.

I guess even my Glenlivet and Jack Daniels are relatively cheap hard liquor and maybe not worth worrying about. I've never bought super expensive spirits ... or wine. May not have even tasted any.

Pretty much all wines should be consumed the day you open them, cheapy ones you can get away with a day or so after (mostly because they're shit to begin with), but they go out the window quickly.
I buy just about the cheapest of wine (Charles Shaw), and what I don't drink within an hour goes in the refrigerator. I've had it go to vinegar left at room temperature but that generally takes a few weeks. Seems to keep indefinitely in the refrigerator. I have some nice sake in the fridge too.

I keep raw agave nectar in the house for just such an emergency!
What/where is a good source for raw agave nectar? I don't recall ever seeing it for sale anywhere, shows what I know...

To be fair, if you're buying shit wine, it doesn't really matter if it goes off or not, it still tastes the same.

This is totally untrue. Freshly uncorked, it tastes good. When it gets vinegary, it's nasty shit. And no, you were not being "fair."

To each their own on the wine front. I know a lot of people who drink 2.5 buck chuck as a daily drinker and are perfectly happy. My in-laws are usually in the $8-$9 bottles for the daily drinker. I used to try and keep it under $20/bottle when I would get a case or two from Total Wine.

Nowadays, and for the most part over the last 2 years or so, we've found a wine we love, but the cheapest bottle is $25. Unfortunately, if we drink something else, my wife complains (and I do to, only much less vocally). We ended up joining the Wine club and get allocations 2x a year. Last allocation I bout 6 and a half cases. Still haven't unpacked it as there's no room in the cooler or on the racks. I have found with this wine, we can cork the second bottle (if we don't finish it which is rare) and it'll be good for about 2 days.

Question... have you ever considered not caring what tequila snobs on the internet think, and just drinking the tequila?

No, not exactly. Like I said, I have a bottle of open tequila, same Jose Cuervo I just bought AFAIK, that's been 1/3 full for around 15 years and I've never touched it in that whole time. Just why I bought this 2 pack of 1.75L each I don't know. Cosmic ray, maybe, or a post hypnotic suggestion in a former life.

Park outside a high school and tell the kids you're selling tequila with no carding. If you don't get arrested you'll make more than your money back.

You are evidently really enjoying your quality wine. I knew a guy a couple years ago whose job was to buy wines for shops, but he moved to France. I still regret not asking him for recommendations for quality wine that won't break the bank. I don't want to drop $300 or anything, but I wouldn't mind buying a $25 bottle if it's highly touted. Can you recommend something and maybe a way to get it? I've had stuff at parties that people bring but I kind of doubt that any of it is better than a $9 bottle. What is that wine you're drinking now?

Ah, with my luck I'd wind up in the clink. The police station is right around the corner of the high school.

The wine we are drinking is from a winery called Turley. They have a number of single vineyard zinfandel that we really like. For $25, I have not found a better bottle and it is called Juvenile. I am not sure where you're located, but I have found it difficult to find in any stores.

If you want more common suggestions, I'd say Malbec's are a good, "inexpensive" varietal to try. People like pinot noirs because they tend to be a bit sweeter and more fruit forward and "easier to drink".

Again though, I would say to each their own. A lot of people put faith in the ratings and the numbers people like Robert Parker throw out there. I am much more a fan of trial and error. And this is coming from someone with about 400 bottles in the basement that I still need to "try"...

Cheap alcohol is still alcohol. Drink it!

I don't tend to spend more than like $7 for a bottle of wine. I'm not a big or heavy drinker though, just something I enjoy once in a while.

Thanks for the info... I'll try to find the Turley, the Juvenile you like. I'm in Berkeley, CA. I'd think that this area would be a very good one for availability of vintage wine. I'm going to try to sleuth it down. If you can provide a hint, link, whatever, thanks again!

Edit: A map of their 3 wine cellars have me near the epicenter! I imagine I can get a hold of some.

You seem to be in quite the spot to get ahold of some you lucky son of a gun. If you're feeling frisky, they have some higher priced single vineyard stuff that is pretty darn good too. The Ueberoth (definitely the wrong spelling, but it starts with a U) is very good and gets pretty high wine spectator scores of you rely on those numbers. Presenti and Dusi have been very good as well, but frankly we have yet to run into a bad Zinfandel from them.

Yeah, I did a search on vintage wine for my town yesterday and now have a list of 15+ shops to check out and they all specialize in wine. This is indeed the area where a lot of aficionados of fine wine, food, etc. live. I'll be calling some of those places soon and look for the varietals you mention. Thank you.
