What to do with SAE 30 oil?

For reasons that are slightly difficult to explain I've ended up with 2 quarts of basic, non-detergent sae 30 motor oil. I have absolutely no use for this oil as I can't run it in either the car or lawn mower. So the question is, what do I do with it? Should I just recycle it when I take the used oil sometime in the next couple of weeks?

Yes, recycle with other oil.

I've *heard* that it's ok to recycle trans/diff fluids the same way.

I bet that water-based stuff is fine too, but don't know for sure.

I'd just recycle it. Non detergent oil is fairly worthless as far as any engine goes.

You can also post it on Craigslist. They have a section for freebies.

I use it for my old lawnmowers mostly. Sometimes I fill R/C car shocks with it. Anything that needs to be lubed and WD40 isn't adequate gets SAE30. (Sticky locks on the shed, rusty bolts...)

Meh, I've used it in my lawnmower before. Never caused any problems. I do understand the concern though.

I would suggest getting an old-fashioned oil can and filling it with the stuff. You never know when that could come in handy when working on things...

hmm, that's a good idea. I'll never have to buy oil again

edit: reason why not in the lawn mower is that it's a riding mower that's seen better days and I'm attempting to take care of it and get it running better.

Not really. I still use it when assembling a new engine. I always break the engine in with non-detergent oil. It isn't in the engine longer than to seat the rings so it is not like you are going to get any buildup in that short of time.

if you change your own oil, you could use it this way:
drail your oil to the point where nothing more is coming out.
Pour the sae30 oil in to displace the remaining dirty oil in the system

The minimal mount of sae30 oil in the system won't bother.

Thoughts?

I do this actually, as a crude engine flush. Drain old oil, put in a quart or two of cheap oil, run for a few minutes, let sit for a few minutes, drain, refill.

I run 5w40 synthetic, and have for a couple cycles now. I'd rather not be mixing oils even with such small amounts remaining.

I'll just use it for household stuff, and maybe in my air compressor.

Give it to someone who owns a air compressor. I have an Ingersoll Rand and non-detergent, straight 30W is what I use in it.
