what to wear when it says 'black tie optional'?

so we're supposed to go for an International wine and cheese festival at a local college this saturday.
the invitation says ' black tie optional' or your traditional country dress.
so, what does this mean?
I'm pretty sure a tux is not required but a suit and tie?
or just formal slacks with a sportscoat?
or just formal shirt and khaki's?

problem is, i'm in the middle of my 'losing weight' phenomena and none of my previous suits fit me.
at this point, I'm in no mood to buy a new suit for a 2 hour event...

I'd go wearing a suit and tie. A tux is overkill for a wine and cheese festival.

Nice suit and tie should do it. Ask around to poeple who have gone to the previous events (I assume this is an annual event) or similar such get togethers. Depending on the college, you might see some tuxes.

yes, this is an annual event (3rd). i will call the organizer's and ask them about this.
