What TV should I get?

36-42'' preferable. I have no preference of TV type (Plasma, LCD, DLP?).

What's the best "bang for the buck" TV?

personally i'd wait a little bit longer for 1080p to become more common (i mean, if next gen console are going to take advantage of it, why not just wait? i'm assuming you are going to buy an x360 or ps3 though )

if not, i'd just go with an LCD from Samsung, Sharp, or Sony.

your best bet is to go into the stores and look at the TVs yourself though :Q

Picture quality in stores doesn't mean jack. Some will have digital HDMI source material, some will have a shared antenna feed or a analog component signal from a distribution amp. Some will be just as they came out of the box, others will have a carefull adjustment by a sales rep from the manufacturer. Some will have a nice dark spot with no lighting issues, and others will have poor lighting and maybe the setup messed with so it isn't obvious the poor picture is due to placement in the store.

Go to a store to look at the furniture, viewing angle, measure the size of the stand it needs, but pretty much nothing else.

Look for reliable review sources that check things like black level and connection issues.

Any reason you want such a small screen?

I am thinking about a Toshiba 62HM195 rear projection DLP around $1800.

I've read some good things about the Sceptre 42" LCD from Costco. It supports 1:1 pixel mapping to 1920x1080, supports a 1080p signal, and has two HDMI inputs. You also get Costco's impeccable return policy if anything goes wrong. I'm planning to get one this winter.
