I always find it interesting how people here, a tech forum, are so resistant to new trends and websites in the industry. Having a personal (but professional) website, a Facebook account and a Twitter account is practically essential in establishing your professional "brand".

I'll recommend:

@wired - Wired Magazine

@tweetmeme - An aggregate of hot topics on Twitter

@Helen_Keller - Helen Keller is on Twitter, yay!

@azizansari - Aziz Ansari, comic and regular on Parks & Recreation. I've never seen the show, but every time it's on, he badmouths the TV show "Bones" which plays in the same timeslot. Hilarious.

You can use RSS to subscribe to twitter feeds without actually getting a twitter account btw. Its how I do it for those I care about.

i signed up a month or so ago and haven't really used it or viewed it at all. i did a few tweets. i don't see the point of updating anything about myself. i do that on facebook a few times per week.

Is Twitter "bad" in some way? It allows people to get things done quicker from my point of view. Instead of browsing 10 websites, I can get everything in one place. I'm able to keep up with news from many more sources, all day long, many times a day.

Twitter rocks and some people just haven't figured it out yet.
