I just got a Audigy2 ZS Platinum and now i need some nice headphone to listen to some music and to game with.

I plan to be wearing them for about 1-2 hours at a time so comfort is important.

I done a little research and have learned that a good pair of stereo headphones will outperform 5.1 headphones, but not much else.

Thanks ahead of time, Nissan

I own these and love them. Great bass response, very comfy, and fold up nicely.

Some may recommend the Sony Fontopias, but beware those.. some people report discomfort after a short period of time.

This question comes up twice a week, do a search on headphones or earbuds.

Mostly it is a personal preference thing, Over the ear traditional, on the ear, compact on the ear, earbuds in the out ear, and plugs that go inside the ear canal.

I like sennheiser, and we use many sets of MX400 earbuds for our portables, I use the HD600, and son likes to game with open on the ear style, but most of the time I game with speakers.

5.1 in headphones is sort of a gimmick, but some effects might still sort of work via electronic delays and signal filtering, just don't expect to find any quality.

You could also consider the AKG 81DJ's. Follow the links for more info:

There's also a ton of threads about the AKG's and headphones in general here:

http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/index.php?

If you wanted, you could spend 15000 on headphones, but for $100 or less, I think that the AKG's are the way to go. I was in the same position as you last week and decided to get this pair, and they just arrived today! I'm loving them so far...

Good luck!

I'd look for Grado SR60/SR80 (open) or Sennheiser HD280 (closed). A lot of people also like the Beyer DT770, but that may run over your budget a little.

Yeah, the open and closed part could influence your decisions, so think about whether or not you like (sound to leak out/sound of open and closed).

Grado SR80's, no contest. Just don't expect a lot of fake, boomy bass out of them.

So the recommended brands are Grado, AKG, and Sennheiser.

I think I would perfer semi-open to open headphones which are either over or on the ear.

Would I do better trying to find a pair of headphones from these companys that comes closest to the top of my budget or should I just try ones you recommend?

Sennheiser HD555s are great if you want open-air; lightweight and VERY comfortable, with great overall performance in the sub-$200 range. One guy sells refurbed models for ~$105 shipped on eBay- I bought a pair from him, and they work just fine.

From what I got from my own frenzied research, here are the pro's and con's of open and closed headphones (I'm not sure what semi-open would be).

open: If you want the best sound quality, get these. However, they do not provide any sound isolation (you can hear everything around you), so if you're somewhere noisy, you'll probably end up turning the volume up to drown the other noise out. Another thing to consider is that everyone around you will be able to hear what you are listening to, so open headphones may not be the best in an office environment, for example.

closed: They are not supposed to sound quite as nice as open headphones (but still pretty good, depending on the pair). However, they keep external sounds out (to various degrees), and others will not hear what you are playing.

When I was buying, I had a budget of around $100 cdn. The two pairs that I ended up considering were the sennheiser 280 pro's, and the akg's 81DJ. Originally, I was set on the 280's, but I found them quite ungainly, and maybe a little too large to carry around all the time. Also, I've heard comments regarding their lack of bass, (see the second link that I posted above for lot's of reviews, comments...), and they would of cost me around $150 after delivery costs. Overall though, comments are quite positive about the 280's. Eventually, I came accross the 81DJ's, which are pretty new (so they don't have as many reviews out). Eveyone seems to love these "cans" and the price was perfect ($100.01 cdn shipped). They are also smaller ("supra aural", instead of "circum aural"), and some people think that they are just as good as way more expensive headphones. So I went with them, and I really like them so far.

That's all that I have to say! Good luck!

Another thing to consider is a lot of hi-fi headphones have too large of an impedance to be properly driven by puny portable music players like the ipod. For example, the Sennheiser HD555 are awesome headphones, but their full potential is only realized once you couple them with a headphone amplifier...

Take a look at the Audio Technica 500s, they're at about that price range. Grados are nice sounding headphones but they have comfort & build quality issues. Likewise the most popular choice in that price range for Sennheiser, the hd280s ($85-$100), sound great but fit like a vice grip and have a known issue with the headband cracking.

So would the HD555 ($110) or the HD280 ($80) have a better sound? Do they both have comfort problems or that exclusive to the 280's?
