I was installing soffits and vinyl siding about 27 feet up at the apex of my garage when I discovered a yellow jacket nest. Luckily one of the bastards stung me on the thumb and alerted me that he had friends living in the area....it could have been bad for me. I didn't have any spray nearby except throttle body cleaner...which I'm assuming is ether. I ended up knocking them down with that and the a hammer. The next week, the drones were still swarming the area searching for the next I smashed.

Bees all use noise and pheromones to communicate. I've actually had success spraying bleach around nests to disrupt their alerts. I'm assuming this is similar to using smoke on beehives, but easier to pinpoint an area. I don't know how well that would work for all nests since they're often hidden or underground....under debris. Yellow jackets and hornets both like to build nests in protected areas where possible. I've had hornets start to build nests under the eaves of my house too....luckily, I caught them before they were able to build them bigger than a baseball.

Yellow Jackets typically build their nests underground IIRC. And, with a lot of wasps, you if you displace the nest, they go away.

I've seen at least 4 yellow jacket nests in recent weeks above ground...but yeah. They love old stumps and anything they can build a paper nest system in that provides protection from the rain/elements.... Particularly if it provides insulation too.

I picture the nest getting stuck on your foot when trying to kick it, then the hilarity of trying to shake it off and haul ass at the same time.

I'm dating myself here but there was a Laurel and Hardy short where a hornets nest fell on top of a guys head completely covering his head.

Gives me shivers just thinking about it...

What you need to do is show them that it is your territory.

Get your junk out then kick the nest a few times and urinate all over them. They will be so shamed that they will move home. Make sure you get someone to video it and put it on youtube as well.

I think the "get your junk out" was what made me laugh so hard about this.

No way! It freaks my out how fast and close they zoom around near me. I went out to roll up the water hose and still haven't finished today.

If I were to hit one of those things while driving, it'd probably bust through my windshield and sting me!

They're pretty cool. I was weeding a garden once, and saw one of them flying around. It flew into the vines, and took off holding a cicada. Neat seeing the whole thing.

For real?
Why?

Are bald-faced hornets in scarce supply or what?

Nests of those damn things sprouted up all over the place back at my parents' house. Every bush was a potential landmine when it came time to mow the lawn. They'd come out to investigate, and then chase and sting until the noisy machine and its fleshy, stingable operator went away.

The venom has uses - individual toxins are used in some research, whole denatured venom can be used to treat people with allergies.

What if you just left it alone?

This gets my vote. They're just trying to make their way in the world like everyone else. They're nominally helpful for humans, and fairly benign if left alone. I'd let them go. In a couple months, they'll be dead anyway.

If you have kids, you need to kill them (not the kids, unless...their denatured venom can be used for medical purposes)

I also thought of this, but the poor, unsuspecting elderly fella getting a huge hornets nest on his belly won it for me.

yeah it's like a Warner Bros cartoon or Three Stooges episode that is eternally hilarious.

I get paper wasps on the eves of my house under the overhang. I usually knock the nest/hive down with a broom and then sprint as fast as I can to the house. Thus far, 0 stings.

However, against more aggressive/scary bugs, I prefer to use spray and kill them first ... but smoke will work to get them away, and wont kill them.....

I recall going out to grandma's backyard with my dad some years ago, pumping a little gasoline into a ground nest, and lighting it to salvation.

Then, of course, there is the concern that one might try this near a compromised underground gas line... :hmm:

We actually used to do something like that with the yellow jacket nests.

Would be more like riding over the areas with a bush hog, then pouring gas on em and stepping back and watching it lite up.

Lower tech, but it worked.
A bit less dramatic and entertaining, but also less dangerous:
A heavy glass bowl.

They can get out of the ground and see daylight, so their "need to dig out" instincts don't kick in. The entire nest dies relatively quickly.

But back to the supply issue:
Have they not visited the north east in summer? How are they paying out? By the pound, or what?

You need to display your stance of dominance. Walk over to the nest and insert your penis in the entrance hole to show them who's in charge.

Good luck.
