A bit less dramatic and entertaining, but also less dangerous:
A heavy glass bowl.
They can get out of the ground and see daylight, so their "need to dig out" instincts don't kick in. The entire nest dies relatively quickly.
But back to the supply issue:
Have they not visited the north east in summer? How are they paying out? By the pound, or what?
Yeah, but at the time we had a couple people that were highly allergic to bee venom coming into the area at the time, we were clearing them out fast.
