What type of nest is this? wasp/bee?

I have a wasp/bee nest outside in a bush that I'd like to relocate/move instead of killing whatever is living there. I tried to take a picture of one but I didn't want to get too close. There's a guy on the outside that seems to be guarding the fort. Thanks!

I'd say Hornet.

Be careful even getting near it.

Nasty critters.

Yup, hornets. I wouldn't touch it. Hornets will usually leave you alone, but if you fuck with their nest, they'll fuck you up. I got a bunch in my face a few weeks ago. I managed to get away with only two or three stings, but I lost my sunglasses. I ran over two hundred feet before they quit following me.

Yeah, if you leave them alone they will leave you alone.

They actually are useful to have around as far as bug control.

You go messing with em they will try to put a beat down on ya.

Ok, I see the one worker now.

Bald-faced hornets.

Nasty little things.
This is my recommendation. (Sorry, their site might open up with a survey popup, likely because their web design team was recently lobotomized with a lemon zester.)

They will of course have a different idea of what "left alone" means, and they will sting you until you understand.

I'd go over there and lay a swift kick on the nest, attempt to boot it right out of the yard, then hope for the best.

Hornets are very aggressive. So they very well may attack a person even if you don't think you're bothering them.

I never had issues when I kept my distance. I got stung while trying to cut down the tree they called home. If they asked nicely, I'd have gently taken down their nest, and moved them outside the limit of disturbance. As it stands, fuck 'em. I hope they liked the machines that came after me :^D

Edit:
btw, now's the time to start avoiding yellow jackets. They aren't /so/ bad during summer, but they get a shitty attitude in the fall, and you start seeing them more. I assume they're stocking up for winter.

We used to camp in a very out of the way area.

I had an uncle used to swat any deer flies etc just hanging out drinking a beer.

He'd lay him on the stump next to him, a Hornet would come down bite the head off the fly and cart it off.

Was like watching a fighter plane come in for a landing if ya didn't make him aggressive.

I guess he must have been a professional Hornet trainer, or been more old school and knew more than I.

*EDIT* and actually yeah before we went down there we would mow and burn out any yellow jacket nests.

Those things in the ground are a lot worse if ya miff em off.

Spray them at night. 1-2 AM. Hornets/Wasps return to the nest at night, so you can get them all in one shot. Also, don't carry a light. They're attracted to it when you piss them off. Just get two of the 20 foot spray cans and dowse the nest for 20 seconds, then run like hell.

Only one sure fire way to solve this problem.
We actually used to do something like that with the yellow jacket nests.

Would be more like riding over the areas with a bush hog, then pouring gas on em and stepping back and watching it lite up.

Lower tech, but it worked.

Yeah, I've done that too on a smaller scale. Aerosol can of highly flammable fluid and a lighter makes short work of wasp nests, with minimal collateral damage if you're careful.

I usually just buy one of those cans of Raid that spray like 12 feet. Wait until dusk when they're somewhat dormant and soak the nest. Never been stung yet.

What you need to do is show them that it is your territory.

Get your junk out then kick the nest a few times and urinate all over them. They will be so shamed that they will move home. Make sure you get someone to video it and put it on youtube as well.

This made me lol as I pictured the nest flying over the fence and landing on an elderly man lying in a hammock reading a book.

Yellow Jackets are a bit different, I get plenty of regular wasps building nest here under the eaves.

You're talking about paper Wasps I imagine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_Jacket

They build big colonies underground.

*Edit* I stand corrected, looks they might make a starter nest like that.

But they usually migrate to other things my experience in the past with them.

At any rate a bunch of mad Yellow Jackets an ruin your day as bad as Hornets more or less.
