Unless you are getting a 4770k version, then probably no reason to get that model

If you buy a ROG motherboard and don't have an unlocked K CPU then you are wasting money.

There is something to be said for the high capacitors an Intel Nic ... taking grandma to the store in a Lambo is fun.

Then an Asus Z87 Pro is going to be a better buy at $20 less money or the Z87 Plus. Both have Intel NIC and the same capicators. The difference is in the VRMs and BIOS options.

The Z87 Pro is $209 and has a $10 promo code from Newegg right now.

That board looks pretty sweet,i would go for it if you had the cash and the budget for the board wasn't hurting your gpu budget any, like spending the extra going from a 7870 to 7950 would be more important then a higher end board.

I have the last generation maximus v gene, its a awesome motherboard and i can't complain even if it's matched with a i5 2500 non k,the board clocks it as high as 3.9ghz stable all cores loaded but it was all the extras like the premium sound, intel lan and the fact it was the best feature packed 1155 microatx board period that had me purchasing it and at $200 for what it offers, who can complain.

It is super easy to overclock you just adjust the voltage a bit and raise the multiplier for the CPU. Sometimes you can just search for other people's settings and use those.

The Asus ROG boards are really nice and have tons of bios options for tweaking.

there are a lot of options. What budget for the CPU cooler are you lookng at? At the high end there's the closed loop water cooling solutions from Corsair(around $100) and on Air there's the Noctua at $90 and at $50 -$70there's options from Phanteks and cooler master.

If you are just looking for a mild overclock then this would probably work.

I would go with the Noctua non-water-cooling instead. The Maximus series is rugged, you just have to understand what you're doing. No reason not to get 16GB RAM, either, I'd highly recommend G.Skill.

It only has two PCIe 3.0 slots. When running two cards they run at 8x.

Seconded on Noctua. Good design, reliable, no risk of spillage and shorting out the motherboard and everything else.

If your even considering the ROG series, let alone the extreme, money is not an issue. If your deciding on whether to skimp somewhere else to afford the extreme, then the answer is no.

How long are you planning to run your system?

Get a cheaper mobo if you're going to throw it into the trash in two years. Otherwise, the difference in price is negligible and the quality of the higher-priced board will well pay for itself over time. Plus, the extra flexibility gives you more options in terms of performance and configuration.

Agreed, I keep my MB for a least five years. With improvements in speed coming less and less ... maybe longer.

I'm running a Maximus VI Hero and I love it. I can definitely recommend it. I can also recommend the Phanteks PH-TC12DX cooler which is only ~$50.
