As for what distro I use, Debian at home, Redhat EL at work since we use it in our production environment, so using it on my workstation kinda makes sense.
Surprisingly usable as a workstation compared to what it was like a few years back.

I'm not using any at the moment. But I'm planning to install the 64-bits version of Gentoo sometime in the next few weeks.

2.4 RH9 on firewall/web server for the house, Gentoo for tools server at office one, Gentoo 2.6 for lappy386, gentoo for the proliant 7000, Suse for the nessus server, want to put Ubuntu on a box to play around with, may move my mom of WIndows if it supports her scanner.

I'm happy with Suse 9.2 at the moment. I've tried FC3 and Ubuntu, but Suse gave me the least trouble.

And of course you came to start something, otherwise you wouldn't have posted in a thread that obviously didn't pertain to you.

I agree with your fact. I disagree with your reason.

I believe it's fair to say that most Linux users know what they're doing. Windows comes on most store bought\ordered PCs. Therefore, it is more likely to be encountered by people who have no idea what they're doing.

Most Linux users know that attachments in strange emails are bad. I doubt that same can be said for the average Windows user.

I know a decent amount of Windows users that know what they're doing and they still run into mysterious problems more often than I do. For instance, a friend of mine just replaced a video card in one of his machines and now the machine locks up randomly even after putting the old card back and reinstalling the original drivers. On Linux that couldn't happen because X is a seperate userland process and the log files it generates are actually worth looking at.

And not even speaking about spyware and crap, Linux is generally easier to use once you understand the system. To install a piece of software I just run 'apt-get install packagename' or browse one of the package tools, with Windows there's usually a lot of google, downloading and potential spyware, adware, etc to deal with. All of the CLI tools make automation much simpler, I use a tool called laptop-net to automatically adjust my network settings when I plug into a different network, it uses arp to determine where I'm at and then switches profiles, and since everything is controlled by text files and scripts I have it change settings, disable/enable services, etc depending on which network I'm on.

I find it easier (on supported hardware) than Windows XP.

For example: to install my HP All-In-One (print/scan/copy) under Windows I had to install the drivers first (per instructions), reboot and plug the AIO in, then complete the driver install and reboot yet again. Under Mandrake 10.1, I simply plugged it in and used printerdrake to set it up. It was detected perfectly and no reboots were required.

If you have doubts about the hardware support, check out the supported hardware page before you try it.

if you do try FreeBSD.....best of luck. it's lots of fun! (I have it installed on my laptop) except I have issues with my sound card (drivers were not installed on it by default)

fedora core 3

1)have boot time down from 10 minutes to less then a minute to gui now...had to turn off some services.

2)All updates finally done after a week long marathon...would leave it on at night and yum would just stall out.
Installed kernal update...It did what I absolutely hate software doing it assumed for me I wanted it to alter grub.conf which I did not . (Noticed it loads gui slower also after login then previous kernal)

3)All hardware working except my network card which I can't really think of any reason why I would want to connect it to my windows network anyway. (scanner also but I don't think that will ever work in linux...and I haven't tried my digital picture card reader..its usb but will be suprised if I can get it to work)

4)was thinking I saw wine on this install earlier, now I don't see it guess I'll have to dl it also.
using real audio player for mp3's cuz none of the default players work for normal windows audio.

lets see what else haven't tried any graphics software yet.
importing from windows easiest way I guess would be using a fat16 floppy or maybe burning to cd media.

Matter of opinion. I prefer ease of use, but I'm not here to start another Linux vs Windows fight.

that is not really a valid answer... some find distro's of linux easier than windows. linux is as easy as you want it to be and as hard was you want it to be. Windows, for various things, can be over complicated and tedious where linux cousins would be as easy to a guru as well as to a 3 year old.

don't start fights you can't win

2) Did it merely append things, or did it replace the file wholesale?

3) Network card, as in Ethernet card? It's rare to find one of those that's unsupported. As for the scanner, tried SANE yet?

4) Usually, the media players all need some binary codecs to use proprietary-typed media, like WMA & WMV.

ISO9660 (cdrom file system) will definitely work.
