All Geforce 6 cards other than TC of which I am not sure.
All Geforce 7 cards maybe other than turbo cache editions like 7300GS
All Radeon X1k cards maybe other than Hyper memory or might be some other low end cards.

I was wondering if they were one in the same, I think Nvidia calls it Shader Model 3.0, and ATI calls it Smartshader.

THanks - that's what I was looking for, but I can't find anywhere to verify that ATI's cards are compliant. :|

all you need to know is if you want some good performance with shader model 3 (ie smart shader 3) then the radeon X1800's are a good bet if your on a budget, and if you got money to burn then the X1900's/X1950's are your choice

X1650pro is shaping up to be a neat mid range card too.

steer clear of the X1600 and X1300 tough. and id probably not bother with an X1900GT either

I think SmartShader was a trade name and/or gimmick to promote features of ATI hardware (presumably as pertained to Shader Model standards). For instance, the drivers used to include user options for applying various real-time effects ostensibly to demonstrate the processing power. They have since been removed but it is still possible to play around with such effects for video (if not games) with the likes of Media Player Classic. Pixel Shader resizing is another more useful option.

However, for now only X1k series of ATI cards support SM3.0 along with anti-aliasing at the same time. Don't know if that is important to you or not, but it is what will predicate my next purchase.

all SM3 cards can do SM3 effects + AA at the same time --- however, only ATI cards can do FP16 HDR + AA at the same time (unless the game developer codes a SSAA mode for nvidia cards into their engine like AoE3). FP16 HDR isnt part of the SM3 requirement afaik

The important point to remember is that SM3 effects are only used in high detail shaders, that can not be efficiently done in SM2. Consequently, if you plan on actually playing games with SM3 effects enabled, as opposed to just watching a pretty slideshow, you need at least a decent midrange card or a high end card. Something along the lines of a 7900gs or better.
