Even without the study, its obvious that if you can get all the necessary nutrients from whole foods, you will live longer - because whole foods contain phytonutrients we haven't even identified yet. All of the vitamins and minerals are already in a balance that our bodies are adapted to.

The problem is that the typical strict american diet (without transfat, fried oil, excess iodized salt, preservatives, artificial dies - and favoring lean meats) doesn't take advantage of the hundreds of different fruits and vegetables available for consumption. We typically stick to onions, peppers, carrots, iceburg lettuce, peas, corn, broccoli, apples, oranges, bananas, peanuts. Don't forget the dozens of different lettuces/greens, fresh herbs, figs/dates, pomegranite, avocados, red/purple skin potates instead of russet baking potatoes, artichokes, yams, brussel sprouts, asparagus, brazillian nuts, cashews, almonds, shitake/oyster mushrooms, red cabbage, cherries, plums, apricots, squash, zucchini, egg plant, various fish and seafood, etc. etc. etc.

What are the differences between flaxseed oil and fish oil?

Flaxseed oil in liquid form twice daily seems to be the way to go?

For starters flaxseed oil is cheaper then fish oil, and if you do not consume fish for any reason then flax is fine.

Both are great sources of Omega-3's but Flax seed oil cotains only alpha- linoleic acid (ALA), which is the fatty acid that all other fatty acids are made from. This pretty much leaves it up to your body to make the other omega-3 fatty acids, like DHA, and EPA. Fish oil contains some of those other forms of fatty acids right off the get go and there is no need for conversion to take place in the body. Some people are more inefficient than others with their body making Omega-3's. Fish oil also has a slight nasty, fishy aftertaste (especially if you take it in liquid form and mix it with a drink).

I take both along with DHA, but that is only because of lifting. I also take 400IU's of vitamin E to back it up so that the fatty acids do not break down as quickly. But for you Rossy, I believe that a multi and some flax seed oil is fine. You could also get the flax seeds in seed form, grind them yourself, and put the in your cereal or make healthy bran muffics and other delicious recipies.

If you don't mind buying from somewhere else and have a Vitamin World nearby, this is what I take:

Triple Omega 3-6-9 (Fish, Flax, and Borage oils)

Okay, here we go - best bang for your buck in a pill form "multivitamin":

http://www.iherb.com/spirulina11.html

Or, if you prefer liquid and/or you're sensitive to grains, use this:

Thanks for the links but what the hell?

Serving Size: 4 Caplets per day
Servings Per Container 60

I have tried similar products like that, and my overall experience was okay. Herbal vitamins and remedies are all well and good, but usually not much science goes into their effectiveness for each indivdual product. Usually the consensus is, throw in that herb, and this herb, and "oh that's healthy, throw it in." and you end up taking 4 pills a day, for only half of your daily values in vitamins.

That isn't an herbal remedy though, it is a whole food. It's like eating a big bowl of oatmeal... followed by some brown rice... then snacking on some seaweed... then some barley... then...

All of which are high in minerals and vitamins.

Then why not eat that anyway? I take vitamins to supplemnt my food, not to replace it. If you are not eating properly anyway those types of foods you mentioned, no amount of mineral/antioxidant/protein supplement will be enough. Not to mention if one does not follow a proper diet, you are probably wasting your money on vitamins in the first place.

When you take synthetic vitamins in an unnatural ratio, you may be doing more harm than good to your body. The exception is Vitamin C, since we're one of the few animals that can't produce it on our own and its hard to get enough even in a healthy diet.

I'd rather take 1 capsule of a concentrated superfood than eat a bowl of something that is typically fed to horses.

Why do people take fish oil?

Who should take it?

What are the benefits, are there any risks?

I have been looking at Costco's available products and I really did not see any that impressed me. The reason why is they only carry generic multivitamins (which can be fine), and I would recomend some flax seed oil, of which they only have capsules. Flax seed oil is better taken in liquid form because most people recomend taking 10g of flax seed oil a day. A teaspoon of liquid flax seed oil (one servining size) is 5g (one does in the morning and one before bed). the average gelcap only has 1g of flax seed oil.

To answer your question about flax seed oil: Here is an article. It covers mostly everything I was going to say, but I have to run out soon and do not have the time to type something out lol

Also I would recomend buying your vitamins online from here: The Vitamin Shoppe

They have the best prices around (sometimes also has good prices) and you accumulate points everytime you buy something which usually makes for great discounts in the future.

I would reccomend trying these:
Flax seed oil, for reasons mentioned above. If you have any more questions about flax do not hesitate to ask.

This multivitamin You could take a three a day multivitamin, because usually you cannot get all your minerals and vitamins in sufficient numbers in one pill, but because of convience this is probably your best bet. The 300 count is much cheaper per oz then the 100.

If you eventually get into it and nutrition a bit more and like how you feel etc, for you, you might want to add 1000mg of vitamin C a day also.

Are all flaxseed liquids created equally? What should I look for?

Regarding that multivitamin, One-A-Day Men's is advertising "lycopine"?

Lots of GNC buyers here... my personal opinion is that their stuff is junk. Their calcium supplements use carbonate, their vitamins are synthetic.

Be careful with time released pills especially if it is B Complex. A study was done about B, and they found synthetic B actually caused more problems with your heart. Also, when it is time released, it can damage your liver because it isn't prepared for them so far down the small intestine.

ALMOST ALL B-vits are synthetic, its really hard and expensive to get natural b-vits, but all of GNC's vits are not synthetic. GNC carries alot of differant types of calcuim, not just carbonate, so i think you are wrong in saying GNC is crap. You should come to my GNC stores, and see all the natural and whole food type of vits, herbs, and such that we carry.
