It was my first chapter book. I had a grade 12 spelling level in grade 2. Sorry to disappoint you.

Nope not even close.

If you were that smart in the 2nd grade what happened? It must have been traumatic.

Can't remember, but I can remember checking out UFO books at a very young age.

Little Golden Books maybe.

I was reading Dr. Seuss by the time I started school. I remember being vastly disappointed that half the words weren't real words.

I forget, but I'm pretty sure it was one of the Great Illustrated Classics series in the second or third grade. Robin Hood maybe?

Going to back some of the other posters here too, and call BS on the OP's claim to have 'read' The Hobbit in the First Grade. Unless it was an abridged, illustrated, children's edition. There's no way a first grade was reading The Hobbit at an age where most were reading The Cat in the Hat and The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar.

First book comprehensible? The Cat in the Hat.

First serious book? Revelations in the original Greek. Yes I'm Greek and my father thought it was a good idea to put me in Koine Greek classes at the age of four. I was scared shitless and took all of the imagery literally. Thanks Dad for turning me into an atheist!

Wind in the Willows
A Wrinkle in Time
The Spaceship under the Apple-tree
All got me started in my love of reading.

Roger's Upside Down Day, or What Luck a Duck at 3 y/o.

I got really into the Goosebumps series in kindergarten.

I don't know, but probably The Little Engine That Could.

Arguable, since I may have had the words memorized before I could actually process the letters. But I do remember being very bored in Kindergarten because I could more or less read already.

I don't remember, but I do recall having these kids books about a giant red dog called Bertrand. If it was not my first, it was probably one of my firsts.

Using the word "read" loosely here though, those books were mostly all pictures with like 1 sentence per page. Looking at that cover is so nostalgic.

Earliest thing I can remember reading on my own is Redwall. In like, 5th grade maybe?
