To The Moon
The Walking Dead

I don't even like adventure games (or at least I didn't think I did) but these two games immersed me so deeply on an emotional level.

The original Doom. The jump in graphics from Wolfenstein (the previous state-of-the-art shooter) to Doom was a quantum leap.

Far Cry 1 was pretty awe-inspiring, as was Crysis 1. But neither made my jaw drop the way Doom did in 1993.

Truly jaw dropped would be Doom. I agree with above it was a quantum leap over wolf 3d and I don't believe there has ever been or will be again such a leap. ID was an army unto itself and now gaming is mature enough that everything is just evolutionary. Prior to that was wolf 3d with a real sound card. Finally PC games were more than beeps.

Honorable mention also goes to Quake on a voodoo graphic card. In fact, that was also a quantum leap over non-accelerated play.

I have been impressed with a few games since like the huge environment of far cry 1 or just cause 2, but no jaw dropping.

If we talking retro and Graphics, Unreal with a Voodoo2 was the most draw dropping ever.

KOTOR was the last game that was shockingly good and really blew me away. If that's the question being asked. The story twist blew me away because I didn't see it coming at all.

Hmmmm Last game...
Has to be the Mass Effect Series.

BUT... the BIGGEST jaw drop (Sorry OP... Have to go off on a tangent and stray from LAST)
My vote is KOTOR 1. YET, I could not play it again for the "Other side"... I went goody 2 shoes the first playthrough.
Wanted to go evil.
The queueing up the actions. The story. The vesting in my toon.
All sucked me in.

And yet KOTOR 2.... Didnt hold me at all.

A VERY close second......
Baulders Gate. THAC0 Its all about the THAC0...
And WHO can forget finding that ring in the abandoned field at the very begining.
MAN that spread through the net like crabs in a whore house.
RIGHT then, I knew this was a gonna be a great ride.

Go for the eyes Boo......
Gaming goodness.

And Graphics NOT a part of my decision... For any of the 3.
My PC is USUALLY 2 plus years behind the curve. Married and 5 kids...
I took what I could afford back then.
Even today (My baby is late 20's....) I just upgraded to a 2 GB EVGA 650 LOL.. For 95 bucks..Best Buy December clearance rack.
Do I need a 660 TI (Or whatever) for $350? Not me... But that is me. To each his own.
I dont need 5000 by 2000 res and 85 times anti-alias.

Story and PLAY.. Thats what gets me.

Smoke weed, play bf3.

Truth.

This game has so many random epic moments that caught me off guard. I've seen a teammate running about 10 paces in front of me getting splattered by a crashing jet that just got shot down.

I've seen an attack helicopter chasing after me and hunting me as I'm scrambling to hide from its view while rockets rain down all over me.

I've seen this guy in a jeep driving towards me trying to run me over but i crawled behind a rock and instead the jeep ramped off the rock and flew over me.

Another game I love to get high and play is Guild Wars 2. I just prefer running around and exploring the landscapes. Much love and respect to the art team behind Guild Wars 2 for creating a very beautiful world.

still gets old though, that and all the selfish lone wolfs who can't even slow down to pick you up much less anything else.

Passing through the gate in Oblivion to Shivering Isles. That was pretty cool for 5 years ago. Not much surprises me now. Arkham City looks pretty good for now. But I was a new gamester when I went from Half Life 2 to Shivering Isles in 2008. STALKER SoC with the Complete Mod was pretty wild too. Atmospheric and moody more than dazzling

Farcry 1 with the AMD 64-bit mod is great looking. I'd have to say Crysis 1. When I saw it I couldn't believe the graphics. It was such a great leap forward that I wasn't suspecting that a new game would be this fantastic looking.

For me, a lot of games disqualfy if they only have looks going for them, I need substance as well. I'm now playing some older games again on my sig rig, it's almost a whole new experience with maxed out settings and 1440p vs 720p & 1080p on lower settings 3-4 years ago.

Men of War impresses me now despite being very familiar with it. I'm seriously hooked on maxing out AI and tweaking around trying to find the skinniest defense set ups that last the longest, going to slow motion and just watching the battle unfold, seeing all the details and nuances I haven't seen before.

As for loosely recent games, FC3 and MP3 were impressive. Someone commented that COH2 is amazing, please elaborate.

Areas with crowds in Hitman Absolution are very interesting to look at / wade through. There aren't many games (in fact I can't think of any, not even MMOs) that have that kind of environment.

I really don't remember too many games that would have be just gape in disbelief. At least nothing was made recently that would have me do it in a positive manner. I definitely like a lot of the games that came out in the past few years, maybe even consider them to be all time favorites, but nothing was done that was mind blowingly awesome or shocking.

Getting out of Kokori Forest for the first time in OoT had me amazed by the 'size' of the map.

I remember the first time playing around with bullet time in Max Payne. Jaw definitely dropped there.

Closest thing would probably be Skyrim when I got to the top of a mountain and saw just how large Skyrim actually is.

Skyrim for me too. The only game in a long time that made me feel a since of wonder, like there was a large world to explore, and it was going to be a daunting task.

Just nabbed Dark Souls and it's really doing it for me. The port job is also jaw dropping, albeit for the wrong reasons, fortunately there's fix.

There were definitely some moments in Assassin's Creed 2 that were jaw dropping.

However, the best game that I can remember doing it was gallivanting around on the Moon and looking back at Earth in Mass Effect 1. That series had a bunch actually but that was the one I remember best.

EVE online. Massive PVP battle in Fountain right before my retirement from the game. Watching ships that people paid real money for explode. Absolutely Priceless.

Fallout 3 does it for me every time. I've finally got a good enough pc now to max out everything and stay locked at 60fps. I need to re download it thru steam actually, glad I found this thread. I beat the game a bunch of times and i bet I have over 500+ hours play time in that game alone. By far my favorite game since the original mario bros

Yeah, Eve had a lot of jaw dropping moments for me too.
Seeing my first titan in person. I was scouting ahead in my Anathema and entered a system with a Leviathan near the gate. I was in awe.
