Certainly wasn't black.
Nope. I see huge numbers of Audis, BMWs, Infinitis, etc. in white.Silver is the new black. White is probably helped out by fleet cargo vans, trucks, and cars. Think about how many contractors use white cargo vans or trucks. FedEx, city and county work trucks, utility companies, etc.
"Cheap" white is just a bit plain. Most manufacturers tend to use different variations of pearl white which usually looks great.I can't stand white cars. They look like rental cars.

The only pure white I can remember really liking is the Championship White Honda used for the old Integra Type-R.
When I was considering buying a Focus earlier this year, a big complaint I had was the SE hatch was only available in a plain white. SEL and higher trims have a pearl while but of course they aren't available with a 5-speed.
I've been seeing a LOT of those lime green mazda2's and ford fiestas. As well as a lot of other non-standard colors on recent economy cars. Seems to be the new trend.

White is really a color that grows on you. It doesn't have that immediate visual impact of other colors.
Of course, there are some cars that were just made for white:
