What was the most hyped up diasaster that never happened?

I think the most hyped up diasaster was the Y2K bug that was supposed to cripple the worlds computers. I don't think I have heard or read about 1 computer that has died or the world being severly affected as a result of this. I remember places charging 50 bucks to Y2K proof your computer, god what a money making scheme that was.

People must of scammed so much cash off that. I also wonder how many people install virus software that enables itself after a certain amount of time just to have the person bring in their computer again to the shop and get it repaired. Those people will have terrible karma.

Y2K immediately lept to mind, although the Cold War was certainly a contender. I mean, people living in constant fear of nuclear war for 40 years? What a mindfuck that would be.

I think Team Fortress 2 is a contender too. I mean, come on, they were working on that game for a decade, they kept changing their minds about what it would be like, people wrote it off and expected it to just be a total disaster... and then it's released and it's actually good. Now Duke Nukem Forever... there's a hyped up disaster that certainly hasn't happened yet (I never like DN:3D).

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought of too. My neighbor in my old neighborhood still has a bomb shelter in his back yard he put in during the 80's because he was so sure the end was near. In '87 when the Berlin Wall fell it pretty much wiped our fears away.

The only reason Y2K was a non-issue is BECAUSE of the billions of dollars that were spent to prevent it.

I am going to go with the Three Mile Island incident for the US. If you survey the average person about nuclear disasters they will often put Three Mile Island right after Chernobyl..yet it was not a significant disaster. I consider it major since it has very heavily influences the US nuclear policy for decades now.
