2400 Baud modem to good ol AOL...

man that was back in the day...

I didn't even know what the internet was-I thought the computing world revolved around AOL and word processing.

Damn. Making me feel all nostalgic now...

I ran 1200 to both BBS's and SLIP connections way back in the day- did a lot of SRE and TradeWars too. Listening to some of you 'older folk' makes me want to put my MUD back up online again.

I had a 300 baud modem, and was running a CNet v9 (v10?) BBS on my Commodore 64 (actually a 128 in 64 mode) back in 1985. The coolest thing we could do was make the cursor change colors and move back and forth.

Before that, I used the 300 baud modem to connect to Compu$erve. How much did it cost back then? anywhere from $6 to $12... per HOUR. Had to mow a lot of yards to pay for that each month. Online chat kept me broke as a teen.

Then Compu$erve came out with unlimited chat. Anyone remember this? $85 for unlimited chat, plus 30 cents per hour connection fee.

And people complain about $40 broadband access. sheesh. I can dang near type faster than 300 baud.

In 1994, I played on FreeNet using a 9600 Baud modem to "surf" on the web using Lynx.

I used to use a 300baud on my Commie 64 as well..

Then I got a 2400 baud, and ran my first BBS (WWIV software) for almost 5 years before I took it down in 1994.. Upgraded from 2400 to a USR 14.4 HST modem thru the "SysOp purchase plan"..

Now.. I have a cable modem, and access in every room of my apartment. Isn't life grand ?

cheers,

Wow! Some of those numbers shouldn't count as a connection. An open line is probably just as fast.

Mine was a 9600 through AOL. My modem was 14,400, but AOL's top speed at the time was 9600. Also it was something like $10/month for 5 hours of use! I would use that up in 1 day now... especially at the crawling speed.

Internet - 14.4Kbps
BBS - 2400bps

I use to be the Sysop of my own BBS when I was a kid... Those were the days! Now that I think about it... it wasn't that long ago. Someone should put up a poll called, "what was your favorite dialup terminal"... hehehe... Mine was Telemate... what was yours?

300 on my Atari handset modem. Maybe less at work.

My girlfriend is using my old 14.4 Viva external on the internet right now since her laptop modem died. Working just fine for her.

4800 baud for connecting to Prodigy on my 486. Tried to connect to AOL one, took me half an hour to load the welcome screen.

I remember too well...My brother had a Trash80 Model 1. It got expensive with the 48k expansion, two FDD's, and printer, but when I first dialed anything up, all he had was the modem and a Radio Shack portable cassette for storage...a mere $2800 investment, before all those later add-ons

Just two days ago I was reminiscing about the elation I felt when RAM finally dropped under $100/Mb...
