Geforce 256 was the first video card I bought. Before that were cards that came with a 486 and a PII system that barely deserve to be called "video card."

Apple IIe 80 column card. Does that count as a GPU? I think that was probably just extra RAM, so perhaps it would be the whatever EGA card that was in the 386 16 MHz.

Voodoo2 accelerator board. Weird setup. Out cable from my 2d desktop video display to the IN on the voodoo2 and then OUT to the monitor. But it was great. Went to RivaTNT soon after.

Counts in my book, especially since you had to buy that upgrade separately which was a big deal in those all-in-one days!

I appreciated the TI graphics chip in my first Tandy 1000 as well - I had 16 colour graphics and pleasant 3-voice music while my friends had ear-piercing PC squealer and ghastly CGA or Hercules monochrome!

Hercules mono
CGA
EGA/Tandy

Of course, my first 386 w/ VGA was a whole new world.

My first PC graphic's card was a Diamon Stealth Virge 3D, which sucked, and soon added a 3Dfx Orchid Righteous 3D Voodoo1 to pair with it. First time I saw GLquake, my jaw hit the floor! My first GPU was a Geforce 2, because I stuck with 3Dfx until they went out of business, and they never had a card with a T&L GPU. Currently sporting a EVGA Geforce 980 and loving it!

I had a monster rig; a Matrox 2d card with 2 3dfx voodoos in sli mode with a dual Xeon 333mhz processors those processors were cartridges back then that slipped in to slots on the MB.

That was when John Carmack first started experimenting with dual processor game programing, even had a setting to enable use of dual processors in Quake but did not do a whole lot.

The Matrox Mystique/Mistake was my first GPU. It sucked at 3D but it handled the 2D great for my second (and all time favorite) GPU, a Voodoo 2.

If I remember correctly, that was one expensive card. The box art brings me back in time.

I remember visiting my local PC store and drooling over the cards I couldn't afford. I'm pretty sure this was one of them.

It got up there if you added RAM to it. It was a pretty rough card, no fogging, filtering and proper blending. I played a few 3D games on it but soon it became clear the card had earned its nickname.

That box is a trip. I remember reading it over and over when I got it.

I see that we all have similar memories.

I had a S3 ViRGE, but it was not much of a 3D solution.

Now the Voodoo blew my mind and I knew I was a 3d graphics junkie, since the moment I saw the first frame of the Glide version of Tomb Raider.
