Tricky question, it has more answers in my case.

My first video card was a Trident 1 Mb (with the posibility to expand it to 2 Mb!)
My first Graphics acellerator was a Adrenaline Rush Voodoo 6Mb 3dfX
My first proper "GPU" was a GeForce 256 32Mb SDRam.

The PC dad made for me had some Wintek card coupled with an AMD Athlon XP "Cool'n'quiet" @ 2.3ghz back in 2004. First laptop card that I knew would be a Mobility Radeon HD 4530 and the first desktop card I ever worked (not owned) with (that got me into the technical sidebof PCs) was the 256 or 512mb 9500GS.

Edit: might have been Inno3d not sure..

My first "video card" was a ATI Mach32. I remember my first computer was old when we bought (was cheap, and we were poor). I loved that thing. My mom flipped her mind when I took it apart. Haha.

Next card I got as a gift was an 3D Rage Pro.

First GPU I was able to buy myself was a Radeon 7000. I remember it not being able to run Unreal 2 very well and I was so disappointed haha. Of course I bought it when Radeon 9000 series were sitting on shelves. I took it back and picked up a Radeon 9500 which I was able to soft mod to a 9700 and the rest is history.

First 3d GPU was a Voodoo 2 in 1998. It blew my socks off the difference in the game BattleZone. I was using the CPU renderer and got 8-10fps that looked rather bland. The Voodoo2 was pushing 40-50fps and looked great!

My first GPU, as in T&L-capable, was the Geforce2 GTS.

Otherwise:

First 2-D video card: ATI Mach64 Graphics Pro Turbo
First 3-D video card: Nvidia Riva 128

A no-name knock-off of the Hercules Graphics Card (DFI maybe?) circa 1985 pushing 720x348 pixels in sixteen glorious shades of amber. I even ran that card well into the 90s as a secondary card displaying my AutoCAD command pages. First color card was an ATI Technologies Mach8 8514 card, shit for almost all gaming (no standardized drivers) but great for AutoCAD with its lightning-fast display list driver. For less than $200, it ran as fast or faster than the $1,500 to $2,500 cards we used at work, so after that we used ATI Technologies Mach8 8514 cards every time I built a new system for work.

First actual gaming card was a Diamond RIVA, followed fairly quickly by a Diamond RIVA TNT2 since the first one kinda blew chunks in most games on my AMD CPU. Never owned a Voodoo card.

EDIT: And they all sucked until I finally manned up and bought a 9800 Pro. Now THAT was a GPU!

First my had family had was an IBM PS2 Model-30 286 with VGA graphics adapter and micro channel architecture

The first I bought for myself was in a computer I bought from small computer place. I wanted DVD playback so they selected an ATI Rage Fury Pro 32mb

Finally the first GPU I bought for my first build was this bad boy:

ASUS 9600XT VIVO

That baby could OC from 500 to 530 core and 600-650 mem using the included Smart Doctor software. I could also create fan profiles.

It had Video in and Video out.

It came with:

  • A Card for HL2 - I still have this
  • Valves entire back catalogue of games through 2003 including HL1
  • Gunmetal
  • Battle Engine Aquila
  • 6in1 games disk
  • 5 disks with video utilities and other stuff
  • a CD case which I still use
The accessories were insane. I still have games I got from that card I haven't tried.

I think my father in law is still using this card.

I refuse to use the term GPU as that was something Nvidia pushed and have always thought was retarded instead of 'video card.'

But the earliest video card I remember having was a Tseng Labs ET4000 Turbo.

How did Battle Engine Aquila look and run on PC? I had it for the Xbox, but always wanted it on PC as I thought it would've been better.

It looked pretty good. I only played it a little and over ten years ago. I remember that I couldn't max everything out at 12x10 on the 9600XT and P4 Prescott

YES! I remember getting a PowerDirector disc alongside others like Nero Ultimate (I think?) and some other useless discs... Might still have them

My very first graphics card was a Diamond Stealth something-or-other in 1995, I think. I don't even know if it did 3D, though I think it did.

After that, nothing until I got a GTX 460 768MB 5 years ago.
