Let's not forget that he was supposedly accepted into pharmacy school, almost finishing his biology degree without having actually taken biochem, genetics, or microbiology.

Ready for this?

Barely graduated HS
Umass which took 5 years to graduate because I was an immature procrastinating trash
GPA 2.3
SAT 1040 (on 1600 scale)
Worthless management & marketing double major

I HATED schoolin' and studying. I had an awful habit of procrastination and terrible discipline.

Thanks god in US, companies don't care about GPA. Not a single company I interviewed for gave a crap about my GPA. I did land an average job in a leading telecom company making 33K. Then got promoted with 45K 8 months after.

I do have a knack for pretty good public speaking and interviewing. And I also worked my ass off. 6 years later today, I'm in IT management consulting- I'll be grossing just under $180K this year.

I do worry for my future kids. I want those mofos to have a much better start in school.

That's the American way. Hard work and countless second chances. Best country in the world.

Yep.

Industry plays a big role too. My ex was a classic goodie-two shoes Asian girl- very disciplined academically- a complete opposite of me.

She went to Bowdoin
Got into Harvard GSE and finished while we were dating.
Granted GSE (graduate school of edumacation) isn't anywhere hard as Harvard Law or Biz, but it's Harvard nonetheless.

She now is an education director for the city of Cambridge, MA. 90K with a nice pension.

But she'll top out pretty quickly if one was to value jobs purely based on $$.

Maybe he was talking about a street pharmacy degree from the School of Hard Knocks. Economics tests were life and death. No pens and pencils needed, just a 20" blade and a .22.

Skipped the SAT & ACT. CT community colleges have a ramp-in program to UConn that let you take 100 credit hours towards your BS for less than 50% the cost & pretty much just let you in after getting out of high school, woot woot.

I got a 1560 / 1600 . first try.

I got arrested for shoplifting a $200 item from a retail store a month and a half before and my parents grounded me indefinitely.

Bought some Barron's SAT book and had to study. First time for everything...

I was a pretty decent high school student. 3.65 GPA like low 4s weighted. Had a few extra curricular but nothing super noteworthy (president of compete club!). Got into UCLA , cal, UCI etc.

Went to UCLA. Didn't get into MIT or Stanford . not a shocker given my not being president of the school / Inventing google.

Anyway thank you Fry's electronics for making me study. Changed my life.

Wow, congrats on a life that could have went one way turned completely around. I really like your story!

Some inspirational stories on here. Thanks for sharing.

Mine goes like this.
Before I moved to the USA, I hated going to school but my mother's diligence and focus on good studies made me a success with an average grade of 8.5/10. That is really good in Belarus, especially for a kid that has significant hearing loss in both ears.

I moved to the USA and found school extremely enjoyable. It was really easy and because it was easy, I started getting into a habit of procrastinating. The worst year for high school was 9th grade as I got a C+ in one of the classes where usually I was able to maintain 4.0 GPA. I graduated high school with a unweighed GPA of 3.9xx and got SAT score of 28, excelling math and sciences while fairing average in English and reading categories.

I went to the University of Utah to study computer engineering and just recently switched my major to electrical engineering. 3 years into my school and my gpa is 3.7 and I have been constantly making it into the "Dean's List". School is a chore nowadays - I got a lot more important and more interesting shit to do.

High School
GPA: 3.5
ACT: 30

College Attempt #1, MN State University
GPA: <2.0
Dropped out my 4th semester after getting all F's for skipping all my classes due to playing Diablo and getting drunk all the time

College Attempt #2, SD Technical College
GPA: 3.0
GPA artificially lowered due to school's draconian attendance policy: miss more than 2 classes in a semester and overall grade reduced by 3% for each miss after that. Pretty hard to attend school regularly when my father in law dies, daughter is born, close friend dies, sick children where wife either misses work unpaid or I miss class, and regular babysitter quits on us without notice, among other things.

Graduated with an Associate's Degree in Network Administration.

Bullshit? Ah, most unkind, most unkind. Well, engineer, elite member, just what is it about my innocent little post that troubles you? My high Sat? My writing for students? Please speak up and be specific. I'll respond to each of your comments in detail.

Based on the 02/09 post, have you now graduated?

He did. Met him in Cali back in March.

Never posted in this thread, but I had a 1499 score with a 3.9 GPA in HS. That was on the old SAT scale which maxed at 1600. In college, I was a 3.99 GPA for my degree and graduated with Magna Cum Laude. Just barely missed the 4.0 Summa.

Of course I didn't really study for the SAT and was a massive procrastinator in HS despite being in all AP classes. Mainly they were too easy for me at the time and I was burnt out on the school thing. Originally got into a good private and expensive college on a mostly full ride and blew it away due to being screwed over by a jackass of a dean/professor. Ended up going into the AF for 4 years and finishing up my schooling when I got out from a different decent private college. This time I paid a bit more out of pocket for the second attempt at college.

Basically no job since my first out of school gave a rats ass about my scores on anything. Very few even cared to verify I had a degree. Only a few government DoD contracts cared at all about my degree, and that is due to how those jobs are drafted.

Right now I'm making good money. I live in a nice house I recently bought, after getting married, and have a son due in 2 weeks.

College does get your foot in the door, but unless you go to one of the big ivy league schools for lots of big money connections, it really doesn't matter where you get your degree. So long as it is a properly accredited school, a degree in any of the sciences will land you a job most places.

Those that get degrees in something other than sciences better have the connections to go along with the degree.

I was accepted into Pharmacy during my sophomore year with the requirement to finish a few classes that summer.

Did not enter Pharmacy that August as both my parent's ended up hospitalized during that summer.

I continued that year to finish up my Biology degree but withdrew from UF my last semester while taking Biochemisty, Microbiology and some filler class. I had already completed Genetics a year prior.

Depending on that last semester I could have gotten a Chemistry degree instead.

Dropped out when my first wife broke her neck on spring break when some old lady rear-ended her at a red light doing 55mph.

Went back into banking at around $50-60k which was great income for 23 years old in the early to mid 90's. By 30, banking was boring me so I went back to college and completed my Comp Sci Bachleor's in a year.

lol @ flying down to interivew you

I had some great recommendations from teachers/references at the time. Some projects that were published in some major publications, and a background with several successful internships where I went WAY above and beyond in comprehending and completing assignments.

While doing HVAC/Fire Sprinker work for two large projects my designs were totally 100% accurate and simply reviewed and signed off by the lead engineer. They didn't see graduates do that level of work.

To me it was boring though, I wanted to go into biological sciences; but didn't want to live for my retirement as a surgeon, doctor. Pharmacy was an option, and I was heading that way. I lost interest.

I am happy with my career though now. Not far off from Pharmacy money and my schedule is much better.

Alkemyst you're so full of shit. Give it a rest already.

I didn't have the maturity to study for the SAT when I was 17. I recognized that very quickly after doing a pre SAT test when I was 16. I actually skipped doing the SAT and went the back door through a community college. Most universities have programs setup with their neighboring schools so that you can transfer in with 2 years and no SAT. So if you want to get into Berkeley, Cal Poly, etc there are ways to do it without the SAT. Look up articulation agreements. At least in California.

Took the GRE and GMAT and a few others though and did really well after my undergrad to get into grad school.

I don't know WTF you are talking about. I have never studied for ACT, SAT, PCAT, or the ASVAB.

EDIT: on the PCAT (Pharmacy test) I drove down with 6 others that had all took it several times. My scores were sort of off the chart. They told me I must have been reading the results wrong (there was no camera phones back then nor scanners in a home easy) it was 1991 or 2. I think I have posted my results here though, I am sure I can find them somewhere. They aren't so epic for all candidates, they were very epic considering I didn't even finish even general chemistry at the time and still popped out 90+iles.

I actually rarely studied for most of my tests.

My problem was I didn't do much homework at times and my GPA suffered. I was the guy that showed up late to class, started my test and finished first plus blew the curve.

I haven't done graduate level work. I do plan on getting a Master's one day.

My IQ is extremely high, my focus on money extremely low.

Makes it easy to clown on me and "my life".

I pick happiness everytime. I have no problem working until I die if I need too.

I ask you to please tell me how I am full of shit other than not understanding your own shortcomings.

I never looked into this thread, but back in 2007 when I took my SAT I made something like 1700 out of 2400. Just middling. GPA was 3.6. Only applied to one university (UGA Satellite Campus) and got in without any fuss. Finished on full-ride scholarship and went on to complete my Master's right afterwards.

Never got asked anything about my GPA at any place I ever applied. Most were far more occupied by seeing the 4 year in 3 Bachelor's degree and rolling right into the Master's. SAT and GPA means nothing in the work environment. If they ask, you probably won't have a great time working there as they obviously do not know the right questions to ask.
