Archie and Gopher were the first tools that resulted in Yahoo and all the other search engines. Yahoo was simply an improvement of a great idea, and google was an even better refinement of that idea. For more information for your report, do a search for "search engine history"

Which "changed the world" is similar to arguing about tanks... the first tanks in WWI completely changed the way warfare was conducted. It'd be silly to claim the M1A1 Abrahms changed the world, but not silly to claim it's the best around.

Google, eBay, or even Facebook. I would argue that facebook has changed the way college kids communicate, mostly in the US but I know facebook is global to an extent too.

Google.

By the way, AOL, specifically AIM, may be popular in the US, but MSN Messenger is the dominant IM in Canada, Europe, and Asia.

Digg.com is kind of changing the way news works. If anything it is sparking ideas that will change news.

Paypal.com as it started people into doing money transactions over the net

Problem thats gonna happen with the internet in the next 10 years is what happened with TV, newapapers, and radio. A Few giant conglomerete media companies are going to own 90% of the most visited sites on the net (ie myspace owned bt newscorp) and just use them as advertising models to push there own crap Tv shows or radio or widgets they want u to buy.

It is ebay hands down. Ebay made millions of profit for many different people, people live off of ebay, people make careers out of ebay, people can buy things that they could never find before, etc. how does yahoo compete with that? While yahoo is a contender. We could still figure things out without. I think yahoo/google had the biggest impact on the internet itself. Think of it. You already know all the websites for places you know of in real life(enterprise rental, airlines, hotels, retail stores, etc.)

i dont think thats going to happen, as soon as a myspace or whatever becomes overly bloated with ads, someone just makes a new website.
