Quake 1 MP = gaming epiphany !!

I walked outside after logging out that first night I played online, looked up into the starry sky and said ...

"Thank you, God" !!

In no particular order

Marathon Infinity - IMHO, best damned multi-player FPS for years, precursor to Halo

Ultima Online - Found a key to someone's castle, using a visual bug it was hidden underneath his steps...we looted the place. There were other memorable moments related to player killing and looting corpses as well

NES games in general. While I had a crap ton of fun playing many of them, my favorite memory was playing the original Zelda. Coming from a very poor immigrant family, with a father who spoke almost no English, having a NES gaming system at the time was a luxury we couldn't afford...but my father saved up for one. Most of the games I played were borrowed from other people.

Everquest...too many moments.
Getting the enchanter epic was a bitch, but that was a cool achievement that was near impossible to get at the time.
Ancient Cyclops, Journeyman Boots.
Looting player corpses.
Kunark Expansion - Lake of Ill Omens I jokingly said on the trade channel "WTS, Sword of Omens - Click Effect, Sight Beyond Sight" and someone asked me what the effect did.
Lots of fun moments soloing as an enchanter. Lots as a raiding guild killing bosses.

Ultima Online, there were countless moments that I could consider as oh-so-fine. But off the top of my head, picture this - before the split of the world between Felucca & Trammel, I was training my lowly woodsman near Delucia, at the City of the Dead. Suddenly PKs & thieves showed up & slaughtered everyone! Everyone but me! I immediately hid as I had no Magery skill to transport myself out of there. I then used my weak Stealth skill to creep away from the scene whilst hidden, towards Delucia. It was far. Just then they came in on horseback & started casting firewalls all over the place. They knew I was there, oh shit! When you cast firewall, it created a wall of fire on the ground, and if you were hiding there, you'll receive damage & reveal yourself to them. But out of sheer luck I managed to creep away from the fires, and managed to place myself into a small crevice in a wall. I was trapped & had nowhere to go, so I stayed hidden & waited. My heart was pounding. I waited & waited, all the while those fools spoke the rustic language of kewl-talk. After several very very close approaches, they gave up & ran away. I stayed hidden for 10 more minutes before I gathered up my courage to creep out of there. At the end of it, I managed to sell the wares I collected from the undead city & net myself a tidy profit of a few thousand coins.

Next scene, several years later. Trammel facet of the world, where murder & thieving was impossible. Looting was illegal, but there were ways around that. I walked a very thin line on that path. My unbelievably awesome character Modrid was wondering around Dungeon Deceit on the Pacific shard. Deceit is a place of all things undead, situated on a cold island north of the world. Down below in the dungeon it's warmer, the still air & torch fires keep the place warmed & nice. The first two levels were filled with useless creatures. I didn't bother with those. I stayed on level 3 where most folks go to. They come because of easy kills. Liches lurk in the dark hallways, and each carry a good amount of gold. Warriors can easily slay one with just two or three hits, assuming they wield a silver weapon. Such things do double damage to undead. Otherwise two or three spells kill them for those with the Magery skill.

So there I was, calmly walking around & chatting with these poor folks. Little did they know I had achieved Grandmaster level on my Provocation skill, something that was exceedingly rare back then. Those with such a skill were considered to be the most powerful self-supporting character in all of UO. The only exception were tamers, who tamed powerful dragons, and dragged them around the world. The twerps. Anyway many of these warriors in the dungeon were sortof idiots. I convinced them I was a GM, and was able to control liches at will. For example, I would say I had just finished creating a liche, and was about to place it in front of those warriors. I'd tell them to get ready, I timed it just right & shouted "NOW!". Like magic they'd appear & attack those warriors. Funny shit. After a while of getting friendly, I'd go around looking for a spinning vortex. Those familiar will know of what I speak. The Poison Elemental, a devastatingly powerful entity capable of killing anyone sometimes instantly, of such speeds that only those on horseback could have a hope of escape. I lured it near the place where the warriors were, then sped off. Now I couldn't lure it all the way to let it kill them, that's considered illegal. So I lured it close enough for it to wander randomly towards the warriors, but far enough away that I can claim ignorance of its existence. Before long, it blasted its way through & slayed 5 warriors instantly. They were but ghosts now, and I hurriedly 'provoked' 4 liches to attack the poison elemental. Keep them busy with each other. Easy stuff. Next thing I hear are "oOOoOooOOooo", the voices of the ghosts. Now there's another thing these poor hapless souls didn't know about me, I also had the "Spirit Speak" skill. How awesome was I? Almost no-one had the skill as it was considered useless, the skill let you understand ghosts. But I did, and I counted on that little fact to... pretend I didn't understand the utterances of those fallen players whilst in ghost form.

Now, as I was in Trammel, players couldn't loot another corpse directly. You had two choices, let a monster semi-loot it & you killed it for the loot, or wait until the bodies were bones. As these fallen warriors were alone, I pretended not to understand them whilst I bought time to get to their stuff. I could've been the good guy & cast a portal spell back to town. But that would've meant they could quickly gather equipment & come back to the dungeon before their corpses turned to bones. Nope, I waited & asked them questions. Three letters for portal gate, two letters to ask for help, one letter to get revenge from the nasty monsters. "OoO!", "OOo", "oo" were the responses. Nope sorry, the votes had to be unanimous, so I asked again & again, whilst pretending not to understand them. Before long they started to accuse me of being a looter. I was shocked, and I expressed this to them, much to their surprise! Lol. After a frank talk, I opened a portal back to... somewhere close to Britain & let them be freeeee. Meanwhile I'm picking the bones completely clean. A good day.

Much much later that day, I was in my off time. I had no desire to loot anyone & I was looking for some R&R at level 5, the insane part of the dungeon where liches, lich lords, & super fast silver serpents lurked. I wasn't looking for money, just a challenge. Suddenly two ghosts appeared in front of me & I recognized them immediately. They were the two saps I had cleaned out hours earlier! They initially asked me for help, but one of them recognized that I was a looter. They were about to give up. Apparently these two fools had gone down there to prove something, I don't know what. Those monsters probably picked them clean, spread between each other. It was going to be a pain tracking & killing them all down. So I pretended to not wanting to help them. I want them to believe I was going to loot them again. I made them watch my awesome whilst they were still ghosts. Last thing I need were two idiots dying constantly & me wasting resources resurrecting them. So in I went. The problem with that part of the level is the speed at which monsters respawned. It was too fast sometimes. I acted quickly, the biggest threat were the twin silver serpents, so I made them attack each other. Next, I lured two liches out into a hallway, made them attack each other. I hid & did the same on 4 more liches. I see one lich lord, but where's the other? Damn, it's really deep inside the chamber. So in I go, into a death trap, all the while the ghosts watching. I lured both lords to each other & wham! They started going at each other like crazy. Powerful things indeed. I looted the bones of the warriors, nothing left but junk. I went back & checked on the liches. 4 were dead, two were left. I looted them & found the warriors things. I quickly hid & tracked 4 more creatures before I'm done. Suddenly a poison elemental wandered into the hallway where I was! Shit! If I move or do anything, it'll come straight for me. My only hope to surviving it was to use another skill called "Peacemaking" to make it non-aggressive towards me, but that was deadly as then I'd be surrounded by monsters no longer attacking each other! I had to think fast. Okay, I ran towards the two fighting lords & it followed me almost immediately. I hid & waited. I then provoked the elemental on both lords! It killed them & looted whatever was on them. Suddenly a new lord spawned! I lured the elemental to the two remaining liches & had it kill both. Once again looted whatever were in the liches. I didn't know what was happening with the silver serpents, but when I was just about to lure the elemental away so I could kill it, one of them spawned next to me whilst I was unhidden! I guess one of them died in the chamber, so I ran like a maniac & very nearly died from its bite. I went back in, because I'm so awesome, and provoked the beastly elemental to kill them all!! It was a tough slog, and towards the end, the thing had killed more than a dozen creatures. I slayed it with all of my might, as my powerful character *also* had Grandmaster Magery. I looted it all, everything. I then looked at those two ghosts, no doubt picking up their spectral jaws off the ground, and pretended to run away lol! They followed but I was faster as I was on my portable horse. I met them in the level above, it was empty. Instead of portaling them back home, I resurrected them to full health, and gave them everything minus gold. They asked why I had given them back everything, and I told them "...because I'm off for the night...". As I was teleporting away, the last thing I see was one of them saying "you magnificent bastard". I entered my tower o' riches, blew off the lamp light, and slept like a baby in the bed which I made. The end.

Sounds like there's tons more opportunities for fun in UO than WOW. Great story

Thanks. I can't speak for WoW, but it was indeed possible to utilize your creativity in UO because it was a sandbox MMO. SWG was to be the next best thing, until Sony decided otherwise. Today all we have are mission/quest/level-based loot fests. From what players of EVE describe, that game too is sandbox-based, however the learning curve prevents casual players from enjoying the game from the get go. So after something like 14 years, we still don't have a proper sandbox MMO which everyone can enjoy. I have a small hope that Blizzard's "Titan" MMO project will fill in the gap, but I'm not going to bet on that either.

Freespace 1 and 2. Too many moments to count.

But definitely in Freespace 2 when you first destroy the mammoth Shivan ship with the help of the GTVA Colossus and then....the Colossus promptly gets butt raped by about 10 more of the monster Shivan ships. I was definitely like the first time that happened.

Also the star going supernova part was full of epic win.

Shame they never made a 3rd one.

I think I've had more then my fair share of epic moments in the most of the Total War series games. Of those the most epic tended in my mind to be Empire and Napoleon Total War, the scale and the sheer numbers of men and cannon and horse coupled with good graphics especially in Napoleon Total War made it really immersive and fun. Considering between Empire and Napoleon I've invested over 500 hours combined I'd say I really like the games

Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn stands out as one of my all time most memorable gaming experiences. The strory was engrossing, I really liked the art direction, and the gameplay was really challenging and therefore rewarding. I picked up the collectors edition for this game, which in those days actually was worthwhile.

Zelda Ocarina of Time was also an unforgettable experience. I think its design and gameplay were surpassed with Twilight Princess, but Ocarina of Time was more special becuase it was so groundbreaking for the Zelda franchise.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is also amazing.

Dark Age of Camelot, first time doing RvR with a large group. Amazing. The game was incredible and I really liked the art direction. I found so many great places that I always felt rewarded for exploring with my groups.

Getting classic raider. i know it was way past the time to get it done when i did it, but mostly it was awesome because the group of us that ran them all together.

That's awesome. I gave up on it after we hit the twins and couldn't beat them after 50 or so tries. I hated wasting that much time on it, even though it was all I needed to get the achieve.

We even went back with 4 lvl 85's and we couldn't get it done. Coordination is not my guild's strong suit lol.

1. The opening level and final Darth Malek battle from KOTOR 1.
2. Pretty much the entire game of COD 4. (The first Modern Warfare.)
3. Finding really cool loot in Borderlands. (The final boss battle and the loot you got was disappointing though.

I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1 Beat the game and my friend's high score (he'd never beaten it) the first and only time I ever played the game.

Starship Troopers: Battlespace...won the final Battle Royale on the Gamestorm server, where all the best players were. My kill-death ratio was about 25% better than the next best.

WoW...back before TBC, I was a Tauren enhance shaman main. Went to Dire Maul. Everybody said there was no way I could tank Prince Immolthar, the tank eater, the hardest single group mob in the game...so I tanked him. With no raid gear. Felt like a champ.

One summer at Governor's school we would play Net Trek in the computer lab any time we thought we could get away with it. That game was ridiculously awesome for the time, and I'd never played a LAN game before. So much fun. The realistic weapon sounds were amazing.

Everquest...running open raids. Dozens of them. Especially Accursed Temple of Cazic-Thule and Ssraeshza Temple. We had a blast. 7+ years later, people still remember me as the guy who took them to CT.

Finally beating the last missions of the MW4 games on the highest difficulty. That took a lot of work. Well, except the Clan ending of Mercenaries, which was pretty easy with the right loadout.

Finally beating Mike Tyson. Finishing the second quest of Zelda. Figuring out how to get the white sword without getting the wooden sword first. Figuring out that you could easily beat the last mission of Top Gun by selecting the strongest missiles and just staying at max altitude, pointing up. Figuring out a trick to pick off runners in Major League Baseball and winning 128-0. Staying up all night with my best friend to beat Rampage. Being amazed by the play-for-free NES stations in the electronics section of Wal-Mart. If you're too young, you can't understand how epic that was at the time.

One time I was playing as Chun Li on SF2 and got into a zone. I beat five or six challengers in a row. Have never been able to fight that well before or since.

Coming home when I was 3 years old to see my mom playing Space Invaders on the brand new Atari 2600 she and my dad had bought for me and my brother :O

it's surprising how some of the old school raids, even with 85s, still take quite a bit of coordination. i wish i could have done more vanilla wow raids when they were the end game. i started playing too late for that tho.

When I think of this question, I mainly think of firsts:

First time playing FPS on the internet.
Game: Duke Nukem
Didn't play TCP/IP natively, had to use Kali
Great fun.

First time playing leaked Quake version. And then playing it over the internet.
Ran slow as s*** on my 486. Had the window the size of a postage stamp.
Still, the pure 3d action was awesome.

But the number one experience was Doom. Playing Doom on my roommate's 386 – again with the window the size of a postage stamp. Well, perhaps a small index card. I see movement. Freaked out because of the waves of bad guys, don't know what to expect. So I let loose with the chain gun – just empty the amo. Turned out to be no bad guys – just some bodies impaled on spikes in the ground, twitching. Oh my. Talk about submersed in a game.

Other memorable moment – a friend across the hall had a 486. Yipee – no screen the size of a postage stamp. Level with like 50 pink demons. Hit the button to lower the bridge. Pull out the chain saw. Rip them to pieces. Scream with delight. “Common M****** F***ers!” I was pumped. Uh, that is until other folks in the dorm came by to complain.

I'd say WoW during the start of the Lich King expansion. It was my favorite expansion by far and I had 7 close friends playing with me that made it even better. Definitely some memorable times.

I also had some great times on CoD4 and MW2.

I've got to agree with WoW. Although my time spent playing the game is usually far more boring than most games, I think some of the best moments/periods of time have been with WoW. Early WOTLK and early Kara are probably some of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in gaming.

Beyond WoW, I'd say Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2.

Beating Ganon in The Legend of Zelda for the first time.

Playing Ocarina of Time over Thanksgiving break in 9th grade.

Playing hide and seek in Tristram in Diablo 1 with other people on bnet. Listening to the Tristram town music.

Hmm, I did have some great moments in WoW. The best moments would have to be:

  • First Lady Vashj Kill in BC (back when it was actually challenging), still have the FRAPS of that kill
  • First Kael'thas kill (sadly my HD filled up, so I couldn't FRAPS it )
  • Kiting the Felguards + the huge Pitlord from the Dark Portal all the way to Shattrath and killing the alliance battlemasters with them, then setting them loose on the Aldor bank and watching people die in surprise (still have screenshots if you're interested :biggrin
  • Getting server first 10-man achievemnts in WotLK. We had an amazing small group of friends that stuck together all through WotLK, and we managed to get all the rare achievements (Herald of the Titans, Alone in the Darkness, Dedicated Insanity, etc...)

Listening to the Tristram town music.

Best. Soundtrack. Ever.

as other already mentioned, Quake 1 and Duke Nukem 3D were my first LAN games played back in the dorms using TCP/IP.

the finest moment however, was in one of those LAN pubs in Los Angeles playing CS 1.6. The map was Italy I think, where I was the last CT standing, knowing I won't be able to take out the remaining Terrorists, I decided to rescue the hostages instead. As I ran through the downhill corridor, a T saw me from behind and start shooting from afar, I ran zigzag using the hostage as human shield, and one survived. The T kept chasing, and after I run through a blind corner I jumped, did a 180, and lobbed a grenade in his general direction (Monty Python pun intended); the grenade bounced between the walls and wtf-killed him. The whole LAN pub clapped, i think i even got a standing ovation. Unfortunately I didn't make it to the end cuz another T was camping and took me out.

Most fun I'd ever had was when I first started playing UO. Was around when it was released, so it was still really new for everyone. Played Baja, Lake Superior, and Siege Perilous.

So many amazingly fun games of UT2k4.
It's the game that truely got me into PC gaming, and the one i had so many hours of great enjoyment playing with clan-mates, etc.

L4D. The fun i had with friends in co-op (especially IRL friends).
So many good (and hilarious) memories.

Borderlands. So much farming. I never even understood what farming in a game was until this. Co-op didn't hurt things either

There are many others, but those three definitely stand out.
