I had a temp job working for the federal government. I commuted daily to the federal building in downtown San Francisco. I worked in the Department of Workman's Compensation Programs. I hated it, but it was a paycheck, although pretty meager. After one 3 month extension, I let it expire and sought a position in the private sector, bought a couple of nice business suits and interviewed at brokerages (had a new degree in math). Nobody offered me a job. My boss(es) at the Department of Workman's Compensation Programs tried to get me to apply for a permanent job there but I hated working there. It seemed to have no future in terms of being adventurous or fascinating. I wanted to reach out to the unknown, not settle for security and a paycheck.
