I started my work career at Bellsouth in New Orleans. I bought my first new car, a 1976 Olds Cutlass 442.

Oh yeah, and riding my 1972 Suzuki TS185. I loved that bike.

Dressing like the characters in "That 70s Show", shooting up from 5'9" to 6'2" in one year, finishing 10th grade and starting 11th (after the Bicentennial summer). Plus the usual raging teenage hormones stuff that in retrospect where close to some kind of insanity.

I turned 6 in 1976, and I remember that my parents bought me a train set for my birthday. It was the Tyco Bicentennial Edition train set:

It was still working in the 90s and I still have it, but it hasn't been powered on in probably 20 years.

1976? I wasn't really doing anything. Hanging out, getting blazed, trying to buy alcohol. Just got my driver's license and was working on weekends as a roady for a local rock band, along with my day job at the Farm Bureau Co-op.

Working as a mechanic in a lawn mower shop. Was driving a 1976 Monte Carlo or a 750 Honda in nice weather. Played racquetball or went scuba diving for fun. The free love era was becoming old hat but there was still plenty of women willing to drop the linen on the first date. Was renting a house with a friend who had the same interests but he had a better job.

Summer of 1976: Bass fishing, kissing girls, and riding my chestnut Schwinn continental. Honorable mention: Smoking camels, drinking Miller's, regularly risking life and limb in tom foolery.

The next summer I was 14 and got a job to save for a car.

The good old days, when kids could make $2 an hour working on a farm. That's $9 in today's dollars.

Nice looking car, but sadly by 1976 performance had fell by the wayside due to the oil embargo of '73 and the corresponding rise in fuel prices, plus by '72 insurance on "muscle cars" had become very expensive due to the amount of accidents from prior years. Detroit had done a great job in the '60's of producing fast cars for a cheap price but the tires of that era and the minimal safety features meant a lot of accidents with serious injuries, lot's of young people bought high-performance cars with little idea of how to drive them.

In '76....a year into my second 4 year enlistment in the Army. Did it for LPN school (91C-long course), which I just finished. Got stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY.

Had a 1974 Fiat X1/9. Lovin' life.

I turned 1 that year. Guess I was living in NY, soon to move to California. I wasn't too aware of the world outside the house. From what I can tell everything was ugly back then. Housing, furniture, clothing, cars ... everything was ugly ugly ugly.

Starting undergraduate studies in geological engineering (though classes did not begin until January 1977 because the faculty was on strike for the fall term). In the meantime, I worked at a fancy restaurant to help pay my tuition.
