What will be the next type of monitor to make it big?

To replace LCDs?

And when do we expect this type to become big?

And what will it offer over today's best LCDs?

Quite frankly, my LCD is VERY bright, VERY sharp, perfectly clear, crisp, rich, and vibrant, blacks are pretty darn black, and it works beautifully for all games and DVD movies. It's also incredibly thin and light.

It makes me wonder, how could the next type be any better?

So when would we expect mainstream OLED monitors and TVs to be readily available and affordable?

I see their huge usefuleness for lighting (replacing the light bulb? wow), and for flexible displays (clothing, newspaper, etc., again, WOW), but I don't see THAT many advantages for traditional displays. Again, although contrast ratios are limited on LCDs, on my own blacks are PRETTY black. And OLEDs use less power, but even my flat panel only uses about 35W.

i hope they can display the colors of a crt, the resonse time of an lcd or better, and the flicker less display of lcd's.

I definitely see equally rich colors on my 930B as I did on my Philips 109B 19" flat CRT.

LCD's still have a long way to go. They are looking much better recently but the image quality still bothers me a lot. Maybe I'm just more picky.

OLED by far will be the thing of the near future. To my knoledge many colleges that have heavy electronic departments are already useing them, however they don't last longer than 5 years atm, and standards say displays and TVs have to last at least eight years I believe. Currently they are still working getting blue to work correctly as it is a abnormal color produced by the fungus where they got the OLED material. We already see OLEDs on the frount panels of flip phones, and we are sopposed to get PDA and cell phone screens this year with monotors and TVs comeing out in the next two years. To my knoledge they should perform as well as a CRT or at least as well a a good LCD.

3D monitors.

Yes.

Three dimensions, where the screen is able to display an image as though you were wearing those funky glasses at your local IMAX. No glasses needed. Very cool for FPS games.

Perhaps not the NEXT type of monitor to make it big but should/may become available by the end of the decade.

So OLEDs are definitely next, I'm just not seeing the *huge* advantage for typical displays. I was surprised with how good an LCD can look when I got mine.

OLEDs, I would think. The only problem is the issuse of burn-in apparently, it's a larger issuse on these displays...

The current crop of LCDs leaves a lot to be desired. The color quality problems as opposed to an AG CRT really stand out if you use the monitor in the dark and some of the issues are inherent to the technology. OLED and SED displays are looking much more promising at the moment.

Again, I'm not seeing those issues with my LCD panel at all.

OLED should improve contrast ratios and color reproduction even further compared to LCD. I know you say your LCD is fine -- and many new ones are pretty damn good -- but objectively, they're not as good as the very best CRTs in this regard.

They should also be cheaper to manufacture than LCD (once production ramps up enough), and the displays will likely be thinner (and can be made transparent, at least in theory). Response times are also likely to get better.

Beyond that, SED looks like it may eventually kill off both CRT and LCD/OLED (except where you need very small/lightweight displays). But you're probably talking close to the end of the decade for it to really be mainstream.

It basically combines the excellent contrast, color reproduction, and response time of a CRT with the perfect geometry of a digital fixed-pixel display. They can also be made much larger than LCD/OLED screens for a much lower cost, and should have a much higher dpi (at least theoretically).

On the other hand, because of the glass front they're also heavy and (relatively) fragile compared to OLED. And the power usage might be quite a bit higher. So they'd likely not be a good choice for cameras/PDAs/other portable electronics.

OLED or this weird technology where each pixel is supposed to be a CRT, meaning quality of CRT, but thinness of and amazing image clarity of LCD.

These technologies especially the CRT derivative are far off.

That would be SED.

OLED also has better viewing angles it seems after reading reviews for the Kodak LS633.
