I havn't seen either of these harddrive makers start making SSD harddrives.
How will they compete when cost to performance ratio finally starts catching up to spinning disks?

Also, when do you think we will start seeing disc software switch over to SSD storage?
I for one think discs have always been too frail and as size increases, discs may just start becoming impractical. Plus a I'll take a 8 gigabyte chip the size of my thumb over a disc any day of the week.

And lastly, we all know the main reason why SSD will be superior.
It isn't the speed, it isn't the physical size, it isn't the durability... nno no no...
It is the ability to have your entire computer submerged in mineral oil for the cool factor!

Nothing like the aroma of burning oil in your room.
There will always be companies wary of moving to flash memory for archival purposes due to limitations of memory retention.
Blu Ray discs still cost a pretty penny to manufacture and its been out for years and they give you 25GB of space. A flash drive that size will add $50 to the price of any software you would buy at this point. The fact that flash memory has been out this long and hasn't been pushed as a software platform should give you a clue...

SSDs, for instance, aren't practical as backup drives. They have limits on the number of writes, which will quickly be exceeded when used to back up lots of data on a daily basis.

It just seems like they are not out on the market yet. I'm kind of wondering why.

Also, I believe that R&D has got to be improving on the problems that currently plague them today such as storage and memory retention. Even then, don't the ssds have like 6 year write life expectancies?

I also figure once this technology matures, that it will become cheaper and better then a disk as the storage life of discs are much shorter then flash memory.

WD already announced they will be selling SSD drives. I also don't see traditional drives disappearing anytime soon. You just can't have 2TB SSD drive and expect it to cost less than $5K.

Hasn't this whole "SSD replacing platter HDs" been talked to death by now?
I thought we had a arrived at a consensus weeks/months ago...

Seagate already owns a company that makes SSD.
SSD is still an unproven technology, we already know the problems with typical HDD. The only thing that can answer how good SSD will be for the long term is time.

They will stay in business. Solid State is the future and they know it. They are just sucking every penney out of there existing tech before releasing and going full stream with SSD's.

Yeah but thanks to the sucky search engine here on the forums (and/or lazy-ass people who won't search before posting) we get the same questions over and over and over ad nauseum.

While this is probably true I wish they'd go ahead and start making some serious development pushes into the SSD market. Get some of today's R&D budgets at the HDD companies working on size & manufacturing cost & improved controllers and we all win with faster/cheaper drives available sooner.

But isn't that the charm of the AT forums?
These forums have become too popular for their own good.
At least someone is happy
