Those 3 really seem to be the most plausible.

Either they say "fuck it" and go back to 100 or they go through with it and go with 1000....or they hired a drunk PR guy for the job and go with 10.

Or they use a completely new naming scheme...I think 100 is least likely...the 100/200 series is actually not THAT old yet...this might create some issues.

They were not sold to the public, and they were not new parts, and if the 1000 series were to be OEM, it would cause no confusion because no one would ever buy them. They were literally rebadged 2xx cards and not sold to the public and only put in a very few machines just so that a couple of OEM's could say they have "newer" parts. You could not buy a 300 series card. So even if they made OEM 1000 parts that were rebadged Maxwell integrated laptop GPU's, like the 300's were , as far as anything sold to the general public, they would be skipping that series too.

For anything relevant to this discussion, and the point that I was trying to make; yes, they skipped the 300 series.

I think, just for fun, they'll go back to using GT and GTX as suffixes instead of prefixes. And they'll skip the 1000-series and go right to:

2080GTX
2080GT
2070GT
etc.

Then 4 months later, release the 2090GTX Ti Ultra MX2 Titan.

Wait a second, I think I've figured it out for real.

First they'll release the "GTX 649" alongside the "GTX 1499", then release the "GTX 349" and "GTX 189", then rebadge the "GTX 1499" as the "GTX 699", but still keep the "GTX 1499". Then they'll price drop the "GTX 649" and bring in the "GTX 249", but by then the "GTX 349" will have come down in price enough to make people think "WTF is up with the GTX 249?". In the mean time, everyone will be pissed off that Maxwell is neglected in drivers.

At least with numbers you have some idea about relative performance inside each generation (for instance you can be pretty sure that a 970 is better than a 960; you just can not say how much better, only from the card names) and to a smaller degree, across generations (but this require more in-depth knowledge about naming conventions; you can assume that a 970 should be better than a 770; on the other hand, for instance a 750 is not better than a 690, and this is not obvious from the card names). Meaningless names (like GTX, GT and so on) are the worst names, especially when there are a lot of versions.

If they don't iterate on the existing scheme, e.g. GTX 9x0 --> GTX 9x5 or some such, I'd expect a simplification ala XBOX 360 --> XBOX One

There would still be a "number" before the Series number. The cards would not be called....The 8 Series....If that is what you thought.

But Nvidia has not used 4 characters since the 9800 GTX.

So why not something like....If they don't add an X moniker, what else could they do besides start back with a "1" or "2" at the beginning ? But I guess we'll find out when Pascal hits.

Just normalize what AMD did with the 300 series. The newest card in a price range is that year's card. Problem is that telegraphs your lineup and any releases unless you go full car company and make the year in the card name the first entire year it's out for, so launch '17 GPUs in '16 and so on.
