What Will Nvidia Call the New Cards?

One thing I don't see a lot of people talking about is that there is NO WAY Nvidia can keep going on the current numbering path. In fact I see the opposite, I see people assuming Nvidia will call the GTX 980 replacement the "GTX 1080."

1080 as a number is a loaded term. It is associated with 1080p, which in 2016 translates to "not 4k." Putting out a GTX 980 replacement (that we assume will be sold on the merit of its 4k abilities) called the "1080" seems like the kind of marketing disaster that Nvidia is good at avoiding.

So given that, what will Nvidia call this thing?

My guess is that they stay in the thousands but skip the 1K number (kinda like they did when they went from a Geforce 7900 gtx to the GTX 280). So I am going guess the next line will be 2xxx. Like 2080, 2070, 2060, etc.

What do you think?

Probably will just drop the GTX part for something similar and start down in the 200's again. Sooner or later you run out of numbers so there aren't a whole lot of options.

I think this is basically right, but that the numbering will be 2n00 instead of 20n0. In other words, the top GP104 would be called GTX 2800, the cut GP104 would be GTX 2700, and so on down the line. That just seems to flow better, and it also leaves room for intermediate SKUs if they decide to add them later.

That seems good, but don't they quickly get back into the numbering for their early Directx 9 parts in a few years?

I guess eventually overlap is unavoidable. Even Intel does it.

You guys seriously need to try to come up with better name. It awful.

I think if I were Nvidia, I would call it Nvidia G7 series. Releasing the Geforce G7 and Geforce G7ti

I think they should start a terminator line of cards. When the new ones come out support for the previous models gets "terminated".

I could see them doing something with a "G" moniker, sort of like AMD did with the "R" moniker (only slightly different).

maybe like a "G700" or "G800" etc, and then start adding numbers for newer generations like "G1800" "G2800" etc.

You can only be so creative with numbering schemes. I'd say they should just stick to what they're doing, except that "1080" will seem confusing. Maybe they could just skip the 10's like they did the 3's.

I'd like it if they just dropped the hundreds again. xD

Geforce GTX 80....I'd laugh.

GTX 1080
GTX 180
GTX 80

Those 3 really seem to be the most plausible.

Either they say "fuck it" and go back to 100 or they go through with it and go with 1000....or they hired a drunk PR guy for the job and go with 10.
