What would I look into if I wanted to make live window previews?

I'd like to know how to generate a window preview thumbnail, similar to Windows' taskbar's mouse-over behavior. I don't need a full solution - I just need to be pointed into the right direction. I'd like to experiment with incorporating similar functionality into my own program.

I've searched around and haven't found much useful info. Google comes up with a bunch of old articles about how Windows 7's taskbar is new... COMPLETELY USELESS for me, lol.

I think a lot depends on whether you want a preview of a window in your own program, or in somebody else's program. I imagine both may be possible; but previewing your own window should be a lot easier.

Mainly what it sounds like you are interested in is the feature of Vista and Win7 called Desktop Composition. Looks like you can leverage it in your own apps.
