lets say you have to buy a new car.

you can afford to spend $60k approximately. you want a new car (so not used). for thesake of argument lets assume this is at msrp and doesnt include tax.

what would you buy and why?

ill start, i'm a single guy, 35 but still... i would get a C43 sedan amg (its what im probably getting). fast and sporty while having luxury features i'd want and its practical ish.

What's an ATS-V run? If they are $60k, that's probably my choice.

Eh, they start at $62k so I guess that's out once you include options. Maybe with incentives.

The sedan is cheaper at 60,465

I'd probably get the MB C450 AMG. Don't care much for the CLA series.
It starts about 51k so you could get it reasonably equipped for 60k.

BMW M2 would also be on the table. Its seems pretty comparable to the c450.

Why not get a used vehicle? $60k would easily buy me a well equipped, low mileage CPO Mercedes-Benz CLS550. Every time I drive ours I realize just how good it is.

gotta go with jules on this - at the price point you are looking, even 1-2 year old vehicles will experience *extremely* heavy depreciation. you can buy a lot of car for that $$

Disclaimer: I would not drop 60+ grand on any single vehicle made today.

I guess I'd go Cayman with manual.

If I had 60 grand to blow on vehicles and they had to be new then I would probable get a Mustang gt and I'd go motorcycle shopping

I am thinking about this myself. My old 1999 Grand Prix is ready to be replaced. Still runs and drives, but needs a bit of interior work, a squeaky idler bearing, AC loses a bit of freon (when engine was changed about 4 years ago, I know they disconnected the compressor to pull the engine, so odds are, leaking at the line connections to compressor) .. Just a few days ago, it died while at a stop light. It did not set any SEL or Codes and the problem turned out to be a bad Mass Air Flow Sensor. Only thing I don't like about a new car, besides the payment, will be higher insurance, as it will need collision while new and under a loan. And I do not like engine Stop / Start feature. I will need to find a way to get around that trash.

An idler pulley and a can of r134a every year or two is wayyy cheaper than a new car.

S2000 and $50,000 in cocaine.

On a more serious note, I just can't see myself ever spending 60 grand on a car, unless I have 7 figures in the bank. I'd much rather drive something that's a few years old and still fun, and put that extra 50 grand into some stocks or something... which is what I do.

Must be a pretty ratty S2000 for ten grand. I checked and they seem to be going for around $20k or more for a decent one around here.

Yes, it is cheaper to fix it now and then. But it has gotten to the point where it may not be trustworthy anymore. Like deciding to die on me smack dab in the middle of traffic. Time to move on. If you know someone in North Carolina looking for entry level transportation, let me know. It still has some life left in it. 1999 Grand Prix GT 38 "K code"

Honestly, probably an f-pace. I really want one and the household is in need of a larger vehicle.

My Stingray was a hair under 59k + about 1,100 in taxes.... so I guess that's my answer. I'm waiting on a 2017 raptor (after the ADM fueled sales die down), so I guess that would be my other opinion lol.

I'd spend ~$50k on a nicely restored classic, and the rest on something to beat up every day.

Probably the C63 AMG but it would have to be a little discounted. Otherwise a corvette.

Actually looked at the m2. It's basically the same price.

Yeah it's a great track type car but I've gotten to the point in my life where I realize all that track greatness does nothing for me and it has a for a $60k car have a pretty much terrible interior and likely isn't the best for normal car things like commuting. I tried to order one at msrp and all the dealer's in LA were asking 10k over sticker and honestly it's not that great a car if you aren't all out going for track worthiness. I've only driven the 228i in m sport and it was pretty fun, but not sure I'd get an extra $25k worth of enjoyment out of the m version especially since there's no difference luxury / comfort wise (and the m2 is supposedly noisier with no sound deadening)

S2000 a few friends have and it seems more like a toy than your only car. $20k for a decent 10 year old one they are kinda inflated in price right now. Would love to have one as a second car(or more likely a much more reasonabley priced used miata) someday

I guess I'm about 95% decided on a c43 (which is the new c450). Really it's down to wait for 2018 s4 or c43. The ATS died the first time I went to a Cadillac dealer.

Aston Martin DB9 like the 03-05 era? Maserati 4 door for like 40k and the rest set aside for maintenance?
A Lotus and a nicer old Lexus could be had for 60k total.
Tesla Model S?

I dunno.

What you're saving on these sort of cars is going to be spent on maintenance. People buy new cars to avoid hassles, the sort rather typical of 60k used vehicles.
