What would you do as a professor in this situation?

I had a programming assignment due last week. Due to some syncing errors between my two computers, I accidentally submitted an earlier version I had which was only 80% complete. I realized this right after I submitted it, but the system is set up to where it only lets you submit an assignment once.

I emailed the professor, telling her that I had submitted the wrong copy but had the finished version sitting on my other computer. I asked her to trust me that I had finished it on time and to let me submit the correct files after the deadline. She reopened the assignment page for me and wiped out my earlier files so I could resubmit. This happened after the deadline for the assignment.

I ended up getting 50% off because my files were turned in late. So instead of getting an 80 on the wrong files I submitted earlier. I got a 50 on the complete files I submitted late. I thought the professor was going to give me full credit because I explained how the earlier submission was 80% complete.

This drags my grade down a letter grade, which really bugs me. The 80 I submitted earlier would have given me a final grade of an A. The 50 I got brought my final average down to a B.

I asked for them to just grade my first submission so I could get an 80 and make an A, but they had erased those files so they cannot verify what I submitted earlier. All they can see is the late file.

I'm awaiting the professors response to my last email, so I'm hoping she'll reconsider the grade.

Fail. You should email your professor the completed assignment in your initial email.

I didn't have the files with me at the time. That was the issue. My desktop is supposed to sync with my laptop every night, but for some reason (I think a power outage) they did not sync. The syncing has worked perfectly for three years so I never check anymore to see if it works. I just grab my laptop and go.

I had to submit the files when I was on campus that day, but the correct files were at home on my desktop so I couldn't get access to them until after the deadline.

That's kind of messed up. I mean I guess technically she's in the right on this, but you'd think the professor could give you a bit of leeway. If she doesn't budge maybe go talk to the dean or assistant dean of your college and see if they are more understanding about the situation.

I hadn't taken the final exam yet. I didn't know at the time.

That's lame. I'd almost suspect outright malice. Why would she think you'd rather have a 50% than an 80%

I'm thinking she sorta half read my email. I don't think she understood at the time that it was 80% completed so that's why she let me submit it late for half off.

How soon did you email her after sending the assignment in the first time? Was it before or after the deadline?

The assignment was due at 2:59pm.

I submitted it the first time at 2:30pm.

I emailed her at 2:40pm.

I sent in the correct files at about 10pm (as soon as I got home). I have class until 9pm on that day.

thats a pretty timely way to deal with things, seems pretty extreme of her to knock 50% off, 10% maybe, if anything, but 50 is overboard for any work turned in late but on the right day, imo

is there any policy in writing about late assignments? It seems rather strange to agree to let you submit it after the fact w/o warning you that you'd be docked for it.

this is why I like dropbox.. I can just access it online if need be.

Yeah. Her policy as stated on her syllabus and the first day of class is "NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS, EVER, NO EXCUSES". I've seen her reject people's homework if they were 30 seconds late to class. Once the bell rings, she puts the homeworks in her bag and doesn't accept any more.

That sounds about right for most of my prof's. Once you turn it in, thats it. No lates and no do-over's. While I feel you should have double checked it before you turned it in, the prof. is off base with the 50% off considering you would have garnered more points with the initial assignment.

That sucks Leros. Are you intending to do post-graduate study? Because if not, you shouldn't let this bother you too much. Yeah it sucks, but in the real world people really don't give a shit what letter grade you got in some paper university (in most cases).

Sounds like a bitch TBQH. I've never had a professor that inflexible, thank god.

That's fucked up.

Does this prof have 'issues' with you? Is the prof a hard-ass?

I can only say the obvious. Discuss the events calmly (as it appears you have) and hope for the best. If you lose out ... well, that's why they call it school.

I am going to graduate school. And I've made 1 or 2 other B's this semester which drops by GPA below 3.7, so I do care quite a bit about this grde.

From what she said, she felt that people thought she was pushover (because she's a woman), so now she's been a lot more strict and gets more respect.

Everybody likes her. She's not a monster or anything. She's a very nice lady, but she does want to be taken seriously.

Either she's being a wise and beautiful woman, or a TA wasn't given a heads up about the situation. I mean, after being told a submission was 80% complete, and knowing she'd mark 50% off for a late full submission...she could have at least warned you.

Like I said earlier. I don't think she fully read the email. I think she thought I turned in an assignment worth 0 points, so she thought she was doing me a favor.

I don't think she would have let me turn it in late had she known it was 80% complete, but now she doesn't have any proof that my original submission was 80% complete. I think she's kinda stuck in between her rules.
