My GF got a F on her final project, because we moved and had no internet access for 4 days so she couldn't upload it on time.

I gave her the workorder from the Cable company showing date & time when it got installed, but he still said nope.

Took her from an A to a B- ... she got pissed..

You couldn't find a way to upload a file in 4 days?

if we could... we would... wasn't a small file either... was about 1.5Gb worth of data and files... wasn't about to burn it to a dvd and snail upload it via kinkos...

and the libraries here... you can't use your own dvds or cds or anything in their pcs.

Ok... I'm still not seeing the problem. Moving a 1.5 gb file isn't that tough. You can get a 2gb thumb drive at walmart for $9

not going to kinkos to pay for their snail internet service... library was out of the question... so...

where else am i going?

I would do the same as your professor. It's your personal responsibility to turn in the correct assignment before the due date. Shit, I won't even open up the submission page again. Tough shit buddy, welcome to the real world, people are assholes.

honestly? no... i dont... not in the place we moved to.

i used to live in nyc... moved to colorado about 2 years ago.. and the only people i know are my Gf and her parents.. and her parents dont own a pc ... and just have basic rabbit ears tv.

where i work, internet access is restricted based on corporate profiles, and while i work in IT, "education and email based sites" are blocked via corporate FW policy. even usb ports are disabled by IT security.. so work is out of the question too.

i'm nearly 40 years old... and moved away from where my friends live about 2 years ago... i work nights (9p-7a) .. so really all i have time to do is sleep and work. i hang out with my GF & her family when i'm not working...

i'm not one of those people that need 20-30 "friendships of convenience" ... you know, people who you wouldn't be friends with if you didn't work with them or go to school with them, etc... around me. I'm happy with my life and my family.

All I'm saying is that I would have found a way to turn it in if I didn't have something pre-arranged with the professor.

20/20 hindsight is always a good thing. in retrospect, probably should have done that... but then again i was more concerned with the move... she shoulda spoken to the teacher about it, but i think she was caught up with the move too..working nights, sleeping days while getting ready to move doesnt work well

True, often times teachers wont help unless you approach them beforehand. Oh well, lesson learned I guess. I'm far from the perfect student myself.

Or have access to a computer at school?

We always have one or two people in class who don't have computers...or at least internet at their house. They have to do ALL their assignments in the school's computer labs...they manage.

This part I can actually relate to. We moved so much that we rarely made "friends," anywhere. Acquaintences...yes, friends...no.

Maybe your "completed project" only works 50% ? You sure you have tested for it fully ? In my CS classes, there were times when we thought our project was fully functional but the prof still managed to find out bugs (you know those exceptional cases that profs have thought about beforehand). I did manage to find a bug in Prof's test program once (that was funny).

Also, what kind of CS submission system is that wont allow you to resubmit the files ? We were always able to resubmit as many times as we wanted until the deadline. After the deadline, we would just submit to the late folder/directory, if prof had allowed late submission for reduced points.

On the face of thing, you still submitted your project late and you should expect to be given points off. The only thing I would fault is that the instructor did not clarify if and how much would be taken off. You couldn't provide the professor a completed copy of your work until hours after the deadline. There is no way that the professor can verify the circumstances of an excuse, especially since the onus of turning in your work is on you.

That is what you get for being a whiny little bitch over one missed question on a homework assignment.

The assignment was due at 2:59pm.

I submitted it the first time at 2:30pm.

I emailed her at 2:40pm.

I sent in the correct files at about 10pm (as soon as I got home). I have class until 9pm on that day.

Wow, you submit stuff at the very last minute - same as me.

Funny. Every student is told about the real world while they are in school, specifically how ruthless and cruel it is about deadlines. Yet, I have never had a job that was anywhere near as ridiculous as the artificial bubble that surrounds academic life. If I'm ever running late, or need a little more time, a 5 second conversation with the boss has always solved the problem for me. People may be assholes, but they aren't pricks about pointless things (at least outside of academia).

That's kind of messed up. I mean I guess technically she's in the right on this, but you'd think the professor could give you a bit of leeway. If she doesn't budge maybe go talk to the dean or assistant dean of your college and see if they are more understanding about the situation.

damn kids today expect too many second and third and fourth chances...then go and harass people up the food chain when they don't get their way.

Why not just get mommy and daddy to call the college threatening to sue?

How has a fuckshitarbitch like you lasted for 8 years without being permanently banned. The moderators must pass you around like a 17 year old drunk girl at a biker party in the woods.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the older mods did not share my opinion that kids today are given too many 'do-overs'...in my day if you turned in your assignment after your class hour, it was late. in my day the instructor also handed a little thing out called a syllabus that usually also outlined penalties for this.

Usually one would get a zero or 50% off if turned in late if they were 'nice'...it's still an 'F' but a lot nicer than a zero. Even if the submission system was down, one should assume it's a possibility and avoid trying to wait to the very last minute. However; most teachers were cool if that was the case and you emailed them the completed assignment...they'd give forgiveness.

In this case the poster did not even have his project with him. If it was indeed complete, why did he not already submit it. There really can be no other reasonable explaination than he needed more time to work on it. It doesn't make sense otherwise.

I have heard so many stories of kids today just harassing their instructor and then the deans to get things turned over. It's sad many professors and dean roll-over on this. There was a student in the paper that booked travel out of the country when her final paper was due (it was a term long assignment so the correct thing would have been turn it in prior to leaving)...basically she got a lot longer to work on it. Her parents threatened to sue.

And when did I condone harassing the teacher or dean until they cave in to the OP? I just suggested he talk to the dean and see if he/she thinks the professor could be more accommodating in this situation. But way to jump to conclusions about my character.

In the real world, a deadline is a deadline and 80% might as well be 0%. There are no excuses in the real world. Some teachers take this standpoint.
