What would you do - I inherited this thing

I sorta' inherited a HP Pavilion Notebook - g7-1158nr. I know absolutely nothing about a notebook. It has:

What can I do, within reason to better this thing? Is it worth it?

This is a one-AMD-generation (two-Intel-generations) old laptop. CPU and RAM aren't bad - although the RAM speed looks slightly odd. GPU is basic, i.e. no better than the old Intel graphics, nothing to game on, and you can't fix that.

You can probably do two things. First, you can add a second 2GB stick of RAM. Second, you didn't list your hard drive, but you could probably replace it with an SSD if you want.

Whether you should depends on what you want to do with it.

It's DDR3 1066. The software the OP is using is just reporting the base speed instead of the doubled speed. Nominal clock is 533 MHz, but it's not uncommon for a cheap implementation to let it drift.

To the OP's question, it would be a fine computer for everyday work with Linux or Windows XP. Upgrading to 4GB of RAM (super cheap since it's DDR3) would make it a perfectly capable Windows 7 productivity machine.

Def. upgrade the RAM, otherwise that's a decent laptop. Installing newer ATI GFX drivers and Flash Player, will let you watch flash video or H264 video hardware-accellerated.
