What would you do if you were in my situation?

I currently have a pos computer (p2 64 mb of ram etc) but a half decent 19" monitor (Viewsonic G790). Although the monitor is old, impefect, and bulky, it still has surprisingly good 2d and absolutely beautiful 3d gaming image quality. My situation is this :

I can either go all out and buy a whacked out home built rig consisting of the fastest gpu/cpu combo (Athlon XP & Radeon8500/Ti500) and use it with my current old monitor, OR I can get a nice Compaq P900 Sony FD monitor and a slightly less faster system which would probably consist of a Tbird regular at high speeds and or maybe a Geforce3 Ti 200.

I AM a speed freak.....but I could go for a nice AG trinitron....

I'm still using a 3 year old 17" monitor.

It sounds to me like you are happy with your current monitior, why stump on a new PC to upgrade something which does not need replacing? If I were you I'd buy the better comp and use your old monitor. You can always upgrade the monitor at a later date when you have a little more cash.

Looking at it the other way, you can always upgrade your PC when you have a little more cash aswell.. I'd go for the monitor, I'm using a P3-667, 256, 30 gig and a ATi Rage 128 based card. Why? Cause I spent my hard earned on a Sony MultiScan E400.

I've got a KT7E with 1.0Ghz OC'ed to 1.1 Ghz using a 3 year old 19" Dragon Eye Komodo monitor! I'm satisfied since it's fast and the monitor meets my specs. I'll say get the fast system or just build one yourself to save a little money.

I'd go for the system. You seem happy with your current monitor, so why replace it? Wait for the new lcd's
to come out. They are suppose to be cheaper, and good for gaming.

I'd go w/ the new monitor. Most PC hardware gets outdated pretty fast but out of your two choices, you'll notice the monitor "upgrade" more than anything and it'll lose it's value at a slower rate than the system.

Definatly go with the monitor.

A nice monitor will last alot longer than the fastest video card / processor

When I first got my Sony 19" Trinitron, the fastest video card / processor was a PII 400 and V2 SLI's. Now we have the Athlon XP and Geforces 3s.. and the monitor doesn't need any upgrading, where the PII400 and V2s have since been upgraded many a times.
