Pay off any high interest loans. Pay off any low interest loans. Build up a minimum 6-month emergency fund to live off of in case you lose your job or something bad happens. Max out IRA. If anything's left, spend a little on fun. Dump the rest into CD (if you're risk averse) or the stock market (if you're not).

For fun, I'd probably go to a local casino. I haven't really done that yet.

Since you're asking what I'd do, I'd throw it at my mortgage. It's just a drop in the bucket, but we're on year 5 of a 30. Not paying interest on 6-7k of the balance = win.

It would shorten your mortgage by a few years.

I'd put half of it towards student loans and half of it to save towards our next vehicle purchase.

Whats the plastic surgery for?
I went from like 415 pounds to 165... some things don't quite snap back I don't look like circus freak terrible or anything, but my stomach could use some tightening that weightlifting and running just won't give me.

I'd apply it towards one or more of these, or to use towards part of one of them: New Siding, New Windows, Garage (don't have one), Kitchen Remodel, Addition, Hot Tub, new Furnace, new AC (AC is from early 80s and really doesn't work well), new 150 or 200 amp breaker box, ceiling fans + necessary wiring, new shed, and/or A room filled with bacon.

Definitely pick that one.

this will be the most boring advice-

if you dont' have an emergency fund yet, this would be a great time to start one.

Bank.

Seriously, you cant get anything really useful for 6 grand these days. Junk mostly. Yes, you could outfit a nice home theater with that money, but really thats just a waste. If 6 grand is so much to you, then you dont need to be throwing it away on crap.
Put it away. Supposedly because many stocks are low right now, this is a good time to invest. When things turn around you will have massive gains. Bank 3 grand, and invest 3 grand. And know you could practice a little discipline when you had a windfall, instead of going nuts like a child with a c-note in a candy store.

This...throw it in your Roth if you are not maxing that out...then put the rest in rainy day or other investments.

I agree with this dude... it takes discipline to be able to save, it took me three years in the "real world" to learn how to be wise with money. I am not quite there yet, but I am much better about spending money only when necessarily...everything must be on a budget. Just don't spending on something that's nice to have...nicer things in life comes with time and hard work i.e retirement ..lol
