Yep. My dad died completely unexpectedly at 57 and never even had the opportunity to retire. It's part of the reason I try to travel as much as I can, taking 4-5 trips a year. I am still saving for retirement too but I also enjoy my money and life.
My dad died unexpectedly of cancer at 52. He went for routine checkup and was told he had cancer and about 3 months later he passed.

My business partner almost died in accident recently. It made me reflect what's important in life. Retirement is no longer important.

The guy I mentioned a few posts up who works at the university - he is also the one who I've mentioned a few times in threads like this as being a major cheapass and saving almost every dime so he can retire early. There is nothing wrong with retiring early as long as you're not sacrificing quality of life, IMO. They go on shitty vacations, eat at shitty restaurants, and stuff like that. I mean, I don't care what he does but I know for a fact his wife hates living like that. What if he doesn't make it to retirement or dies like 3 months after retiring? All of those years wasted doing nothing for a retirement which may never come - really unwise IMO, and even if he does make it, I have a feeling he'll be an even bigger cheapass in retirement.

Being cheap can become a habit too. There's been times I've had to be cheap, and I catch myself doing dumb shit cause that's what I've done in the past. It would suck retiring early, then living like you're on foodstamps.
