What would you do if any kind of scan on your computer from chkdsk to antivirus to symantec's blasterfix caused it to crash midway through? Safe mode also crashes while loading.

System ran fine 24 hours ago. Latest two things that happened: had the msblaster virus [but it doens't do this kind of stuff] and installed Mozilla Firebird.

Please help me troubleshoot this before I have to format.

Backup, format, reinstall, take heed of security updates from Windows from now on.

If that's not possible, sorry.

I'd format/start over.

If I continued to have problems, I'd probably start looking into the hard disk or IDE cable as the source of the problems.

Could be your RAM I suppose, but I doubt it would've suddenly gone bad.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but if safe mode is frying, that's not a good sign.
