I'm sure the answer will be the desk job but want to ask anyways.

30 mile commute, 5 8 hours in a cube + 1 hour lunch that you have to take

or

7 mile commute, 4 10 hour day working outside or inside...physical labor working for the city possible overtime in the winter if you have a cdl and can plow roads..

edit: same pay. let's just say same benefits too for now.

$$ is a huge determining factor... And to top it off good $$ + Overtime... Second job could be alot better.

Next question is what are the advancement options in each.

Actually... Ax that.

I'd take the second job for the following reasons.

4 on 3 off. Overtime is good money, I am behind a desk right now and would much rather go with the outside job even in extreme weather conditions.

not really, I guess you could look at overtime as an advancement for the physical labor job, the other one you're looking at the same position for indefinately.

k, this doesn't have to do with the poll, just my life but if your company was in a merger and you MIGHT nobody knows...be laid off in 3 months would you stick around for it or just up and leave. there is no sure answer weather you'll be let go or not......hang out for the 3 months and see what happens? (I like everyone here have no problems with anyone but i'm just sick of the cube life and putting the miles on my car especially when it costs me $8+ a day in gas.

Cripes. If I could get $50k/year to do that kind of work, I'd be out that door. Not that I don't love my job, but the only reason I don't do what I truly "love" is because you can't get paid that much for it

I would stick around for the next 3 months planning my next move and saving every dollar from my pay checks that I could. Depending on how the organization was going to be run after the merger I may just leave once the dust setteled anyway.

Regardless, I would probably adopt somewhat of an Office Space mentatlity and really only get about 30 minutes of real actual work done a day.

How long do you plan on working FT for? When are you going to quit whatever job and go to college?

EDIT: What sorts of jobs do you want with a math degree? Are you going to want to work in an office environment then? Also, think about what kind of experience would best fit your resume.

7 mile commute for me. I hate spending extra time just to GET TO work or get home from it. They don't pay you for those hours... and traffic is a b!tch.

All else seems equal enough for me not to worry about.
