something similar to this happened to me, I woke up very confused, the guy was like 'holy crap i am at the wrong place' and was obviously drunk, he let himself out, i sat dumbfounded and got up and locked the door, end o story.

Wow, you guys sound like a bunch of wimpy paranoid scaredy cats. Shoot him? Beat him? Pffft. How about acting like a manb and tell the guy to leave or you'll call the police. Responding to the guy with fists and violence is what gets family members killed and innocent people shot. The whole "I'm Mr. Tough Guy" thing says a few things: small penis, small ego, small mind.

Sure I *could* leave my doors unlocked but why?

A locked door is no deterrent for a real thief. It is however a deterrent for a half-assed punk looking for a quick/easy grab.

Nice area - you go to the lakes much for some boating or anything?

I live at the edge of NYC and I don't recommend leaving anything unlocked around here

so i talked to the guy who walked into the house..

I basically said he needs to stop drinking so he stops doing stupid shit.. He's so defensive about his drinking its hilarious..

Defensive enough to say " I WASN'T DRUNK!!!"

So I said.. wow.. doing something so stupid, I guess I assumed you were retarded drunk.. You mean to tell me you were sober and did something so stupid..??? That makes you look even more retarded.

shoot i live in a area where i could leave my house open (doors open), car sitting in the driveway witht he keys in it and go away for a vacation and NOBODY around here wil take anything. odds are they will take the keys into the house and close the door for me.

BUT i still lock the door every night. why? oh i am not afraid of anyone in town taking anything. But its the chance that someone driving around will (very very slim chance of that also)

Precisely. Half-assed punks are far more plentiful than real thieves. A truly determined thief could figure a way into nearly any residence. Fortunately, most aren't willing to go to much effort. They'd sooner just look for the houses or cars that aren't locked.

I also keep it locked because some people on campus know where I live now, and some of them do get quite drunk on occasion. I'd rather not risk being the target of some moronic prank or practical joke that could screw up the inside of my apartment. And I usually don't care for uninvited guests. Given the exceedingly cluttered state of my apartment, any "guests" would surely flee, either in terror, or out of a sense of self-preservation.

Maybe that would do him some good. Having someone stop him at gun point then hauled off to jail for the night.

So I talked to my drunk friend. JD made him come over and apologize to him and his neighbor.

So I talk to the guy, and he says "geez they were pissed. I apologized, but I still don't know what the big deal is. It's not like I walked around and tried to take stuff. All I did was open the door, step in, and ask for JD. So what it was late. The guy's kid saw me and didn't seem to care. I wasn't even really drunk, I just got the wrong house"

I told him "Actually, the big deal is it was late, and you don't seem to give a fuck. You're inconsiderate I guess, not to mention, regardless of where you walked, you were an intruder, late at night, and they don't know you. Not to mention the dad woke up to his kid talking to a stranger in their house, late at night. You're completley lucky you didn't get shot in teh face."

After we go to bed, the guys in the apartment below us call me and say someone was in my car. Grabbed baseball bat, and looked over the deck. Sure enough, passed out frat boy in the passenger seat of my car with the door wide open. We call the cops, they rouse him up and he pukes MAINLY out the door. Cops ask if we have something to clean it up with, and we bring down some 409 and a roll of paper towels and they make him clean it up to our liking

Turns out he was the president of a frat that had been kicked off campus the year before and were renting a house next door to us. He got taken away in the paddy wagon, which was quite a site once the frat boys in the house next door say him sitting on the curb in cuffs.

You showed him! Why didnt you just wake him up yourself and tell him to get the hell out of your car? The police didnt need to be involved at all. Hes drunk and sleeping. Hes obviously harmless

I swear people have no balls anymore. Its not that hard to talk to someone.

Yes, getting woken up out of bed at 2am means you are thinking completely rationally, and walking down 3 flights of stairs to confront a stranger that is in your car is a GREAT idea! At the time I didn't realize it was a passed out frat boy, looking down from 3 stories could have been anyone

Dude. HES. NOT. MOVING. Why would someone who is robbing you be SLEEPING in your car? Instead of thinking it might of been a dead body (these do not move) or someone sleeping (this doesnt move either), you instead thought it was a moving, breathing BAD GUY thats OUT TO GET YOU.

By using deductive reasoning you could definitely realize its just some drunk sleeping. Why would someone who is stealing a car or stealing stuff be sleeping in the car?

And by you calling him a "frat boy" makes it more obvious because you live by a college where there is an influx of drunken college kids. So whats more likely in your car? A robber that DOESNT MOVE, or a drunk college kid who passed out there

Of course, one point that could be made is that locking doors isn't useful if the door lock is flimsy and can be kicked in (which is often true).

Actually, I think the question is: can you explain the motivation for bothering to lock the doors? Why are you so paranoid? Do you envision that people are going around your neighborhood, door to door every night, looking for the doors that are unlocked? If so, your neighborhood sucks. Are your doors locked 24/7, or do you think that someone will break in only when you're sleeping? "Okay, kids, go play in the back yard, but take your keys with you because I'm locking the door!"

It only takes one incident to make not locking your door not worth it. While it does depend on where you live, I don't have the mindset that there's always someone lurking around or whatever and that sure, I could leave my door unlocked and chances of anything happening are low.

But it only takes one freak incident of some stranger coming and robbing you or killing you or a family member to realize that a simple 2 second routine of locking the door could have prevented that. It's just not worth taking that chance.

why are so many people quick to say they'd shoot or kill someone? What if it's some stranger that was getting chased by a rapists and ran into your house hoping for safety? What if it's some lost child that just got confused? My guess is a lot of people here are talking tough...but those of you who shoot first and ask later need to seriously think of the consequences. Could you live with yourself if you killed an innocent person just b/c you wanted to try our your new shotgun? And yes, I do own a couple of guns and yes I have them accessible but I certainly wouldn't walk up and just shoot someone in my house without identifying myself and them first from a distance.

someone figure out where cheezy321 lives, get your gun, then get there at 2am. Go break into his car, make sure the only way he can see you is from a straight down view, and pretend you're asleep. When he comes down to serve you soup and give you a back rub, rob him!

I still can't figure out who JD is, who your friend is, who you are, and where you live.

But he should have been shot in the face.
