There are so many holes in that story it isn't even funny.

IRL though, if I was moving data from one machine to another, I probably wouldn't have ever caught that there was a 5 GB size discrepancy. When someone asks me to move data for them, I usually just put the old hard drive in an external enclosure and tell the user to take whatever they want off it.

Definitely not true.. I did a lot of work with cyber crime units / computer forensics including and talked to countless members of all local and federal gov agencies during this time and it definitely never moves that quickly nor would they have been able to prosecute the guy without using very specific techniques for examining the data. This guy would have lawyered up and gotten off scott free if it went down like that story was written. Furthermore they wouldn't have had a citizen accompany them on the 'bust'

Not to mention these cases are backlogged by months if not years and a lot of times they're never prosecuted properly because there are so many loopholes and ways to screw up since the officers in these programs aren't trained properly. Furthermore they all use commercial software for this since very few are actually trained properly on how to do a proper forensic investigation and it's hard to prove a case without using commercial software since proving it in court is half the battle and without established techniques it's easy to get a savvy lawyer to get the perp off. Having a civilian recover the data like that is definitely not likely and wouldn't be admissible in court anyway.

Not trying to be a dick.. just offering my experience.

When I was working at BB a few years back, some guy brought his computer in for a virus cleaning. We had it hooked up to one of our workstations for a while, facing the sales floor. Needless to say we got some horrified looks when his screen saver came on. We called the cops immedeately. Child porn unfortunately is more common than one would think.

Most people who look at child porn are probably not involved in making it. If the client really was a long time friend I would probably just delete the folder and tell him to get professional help or something. Also shens on the story.

How often does the State's attorney hang out at the police station???

And you would think that a guy who works with the police would know the correct term. It's attorney general or AG, never heard them called just 'State's attorney'

I'd have blackmailed the shit out of that guy. $1000 and a copy of the files for personal use would have shut me up.

I was given a computer to clean up, and make smooth running. It had a smallish HD, and the amount of space used didn't make sense with what was installed. I was interested in finding the problem, as there wasn't enough free space to do a proper defrag. After screwing around awhile, I found a folder of hidden porn. It wasn't kiddie porn though. Who ever owned it liked large hairy women :^D

I deleted the folder, because the story I was given, was that he bought the machine off an army buddy, and he just wanted it running right. I had second thoughts after deleting the folder, and started trying to recover the data, but said screw it. He can find more online if it was really his.

Anyway, it isn't that far fetched to find a file size discrepancy in a machine you're working on.

As to the specific question...

A lot of it depends on details. There's kiddie porn, and then there's *kiddie porn*. knowing the person as well as the story purported would have bearing on it also. I can't really make a blanket statement, but I'd lean towards turning them in.

The deacon's wife forgot to say she would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those meddling kids.

I'm not so sure I'd turn them in. People tend to have a knee-jerk reaction to this sort of stuff. Chances are they found it for free on a p2p network (the same one that installed all that spyware you're cleaning off their PC for them  ) and thus had no part in creating it or creating a demand for it. But you turn them in and they'll be strung up by the balls. Maybe it would depend on whether or not I liked them.

Worst I ever personally found was vanilla porn on my 12 y/o cousin's computer. I just kinda marvelled at technology, when I was his age I kept a playboy under my mattress and that was all I had. Kids these days have it good.

In that situation I'd probably try to get him busted but since he's a good friend (possibly) I'd maybe have trouble doing that. Maybe I'd confront him about it, I don't know. It's a tough one. Maybe secretly tell on him but make it clear to police that they should not get you involved. Maybe something totally anonymous like a letter dropped off in a PD suggestion box or something, 6 months later. (by that time he'll have accumulated more porn).

I don't understand how people don't secure their porn better though. If I was into that stuff I'd put it all on some obscure server in the attic with super high encryption then share it out on another server somewhere else in the house, then share it out again on another server, so if the main servers are browsed or physically accessed and the share is not mounted, it's nowhere to be found.
