What would you do?

I decided to walk home today from work. It's about 5 miles. It took me about 2 hours. When I got home, I realized my entire back pack was wide open, and my spare shirt had fallen out along the way. I guess the zipper broke or something but I didn't notice.

Anyway, I have all the essentials: laptop, power cord, charger, etc. But I know I had other stuff in the bag too, like my recent mail, some letters, etc. I highly doubt it's anything important, but I did lose my spare shirt, so I'm afraid other things may have fallen out too.

I've thought about retracing my steps, but the chances of me finding anything in the dark streets of Boston are slim, and I don't even know what I'd be looking for - it's not like I'm missing any "specific" item other than the shirt.

So what would you do? Chalk it up and just assume if you lost something, it wasn't important? Or retrace your steps?

I'd let my dog sniff my shirt to learn my scent and then send it out to find all the dropped items. Dogs can cover ground faster and the dark doesn't affect their sense of smell. Of course you lost your shirt so I guess you're screwed.

Figure out exactly what is missing. Determine if value of missing items > (probability of getting stabbed * cost of getting stabbed) + effort of retracing steps

Well, it's been two hours since your original posting. You can tell us what you did (aside from posting to ATOT).

The bike idea was the winner.

I write things down on bits of paper or bits of Tyvek when I'm at work. I was in the lab yesterday morning going from place to place and checking items off my list. As I was about the leave the lab, I realized that I had forgotten to pick up my list at one of my stops. I retraced my steps for about 10 minutes, but I didn't find it.

I figure I'd remember what I wrote down if it was that important.

Stabbing someone on a bike is hard... it'd be easier to shoot him... or maybe club him with an aluminum baseball bat.

Poll doesn't have my vote.

Be aware of what's going on or learn to suffer the consequences. How unaware are you to be walking along and not notice the sounds of things falling out? Zipper failed? Blame your equipment if you must.

If you're that obvious this is the nicest way in the universe to be reminded you're mugger fodder. You may not even notice while it happens.

I'd walk back. I don't like losing things, and I'll take the time to look. I'll look for dropped pennies just out of principle, because losing things is unacceptable. I'm also good at finding things, and it's one of the few skills I have. If I can't find it, it likely can't be found.

Agreed.
Unless its your insulin and you cant get more, let it go.
The only things I'd kill myself to recover are cherished family heirlooms (of which there are none) or something absolutely required for the survivial of a loved one.

If its insulin or an inhaler, you should always have spares. If the zombie invasion comes I would only go back for something that cured zombieism and there were no others around. And I'd go back fully armed and ready for action.

I think you should definitely go back and look since it sounds like you now only have one shirt. Very important to have a spare
