go with a 3200+ venice and dfi lanparty for a good OC'er
then max your ram with 4x512MB
should stay under $500

sorry about that t3h but that is all i would really want to upgrade right now. i gues to that it will have to have an agp port as well so i can continue to use my x800 pro card. just gameing is all it will be used for..

Just wanted to give you a heads-up.....there is no 3700+ venice core. That would be San Diego. There is, however, a 3800+ venice.

San Diego 3700 2.8 Ghz 1.4v on stock cooling. A venice may possibly clock higher, but will never out perform it.

I'd say go with the 3700+ San Diego then, and people have recommended the Asus K8T800 motherboard for socket 939 because it's highly stable.

You are correct. I guess I was sleeping at that moment and had added the venice in at the end upon realization there are numerous 3200+ that are not Venice. The main thing I meant to communicate is that the purchasing a Venice core for low end and a San Diego for upper end is best.

:thumbsup: I second this recommendation. No reason for you to go with a 939 socket mobo if you want to keep your vid card for this upgrade.

Are you sure you want to spend $500 on just a motherboard and CPU? At a certain price point (usually about $200 for a CPU and $75 for a motherboard), the price-performance ratio begins to slip out of your favor. In other words, spending $500 isn't going to get you much more than if you just spent $250. For example, Newegg sells an ECS 760GX-M motherboard & Athlon 64 3400+ for $232 (or $244 if you need a CPU cooler).

If you're sure about the $500, though, Newegg has a DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D motherboard and a retail "San Diego" Athlon 64 3700+ for $472. The Lanparty board is a great overclocker, and you could get that 2.2GHz chip up to perhaps 2.6GHz on a stock cooler. If you don't want to overclock, just get a basic $60-$70 board and an Athlon 64 3800+ "Venice."

I'd just get a San Diego 3700+ and an NF3 Ultra board. I don't see why you'd want a VIA chipset.

If you want to keep your AGP card, then I wouldnt upgrade the MoBo. Id either get an athlon64 3500+, or just wait a whiile longer and get a new cpu/mobo/video card all at the same time.

You can get both for $396 from Newegg is what he said.

Let's consider what we know:

1.You have $500 to spend on a mobo/CPU upgrade
2.You will use it for gaming
3.You will not be overclocking
4.You want to keep your x800pro AGP card

The last one is the only thing holding me back from recommending the usual socket 939 combo with venice/san diego core. If you don't want to wait and save up some more cash, then consider the options presented by DanDaMan315, and Tostada. They would be nice rigs and would probably hold you over for a while. Eventually, AGP will no longer be an option....also something to consider.

You guys are acting like his X800 Pro is going to be outdated soon. It's a 12-pipe card with 29 GB/sec of memory bandwidth. The best $500 cards right now are 16-pipe with 35 GB/sec of bandwidth. I think it'll last him awhile.

And for most cards the AGP version is still cheaper than the PCI-E version. All other things being equal, I'd get a PCI-E boad, but it's not like AGP cards are going to disappear off the face of the earth in the next 2 years.

AGP'll stick around for about a year and a half...... but after that it'll be damn hard to upgrade.
