hahah just thought i would be different. the above can be had at newegg for $396.
This setup would be especially good if you had an existing AGP card, some non-dual channel ram. And if you are not going to OC than the above is even better .
 I second this recommendation. No reason for you to go with a 939 socket mobo if you want to keep your vid card for this upgrade.

Why not a 939 board with an agp slot? 3700 seems like a good choice regardless of the socket though.

This socket 939 board will allow you to keep your AGP card. It's a bit pricey but it's also very very nice.
As for a CPU, I'd just get the best venice/San Diego processor that the remaining ~$385 will get you.

Why? Because there is no future upgrade potential with AGP. While I don't believe in "future-proofing", as commonly defined by certain reviewers and forum posters, I do believe in common-sense upgrades. I would have recommended 939+AGP mobo if perhaps this were a complete build-on-a-budget, carrying over the AGP card in the process, but that's not the case here. The OP only wants to upgrade CPU/Mobo and has $500 to put down, nothing else.
Really though, no decision here would be the wrong one, because it is just a simple upgrade and not an all-new rig, hence the reason I told the OP to consider both options.

That's the exact same thing I already suggested.
