Quite a few presumptuous people here who have decided that there is no legitimate reason to carry large sums of cash. I'll chalk that up to lack of life experience.

And it's a great case study in situational ethics to read that if a person didn't have a good enough reason to carry cash, then they deserve to lose it. Sorry, there's no logic in that. Maybe that would make some people feel better about themselves, rationalizing why they should keep the money, but that just evades the issue.

In a situation like this one, you either are honest, or you aren't. That's all there is.

some people don't trust banks - like lots of recent immigrants.

but, regardless, i'd turn it in to the police.

I definitely would have returned it, even knowing the amount of money it contained. I just couldn't live with myself knowing that I took anything.

I would have taken it straight to the PD.

On the ride back I'd daydream about all the things I could have done with the money, likely getting into a fatal wreck in the process.

That actually the ideal situation for keeping money. If a bank gets robbed, they are FDIC insured (meaning they get all their money back).

Might as well keep it in that case. I'd check it for blister packs of ink and/or tracking devices first, though.

Wow... And we wonder, when reading a news story about someone who stuck their head in a lion's mouth or something equally stupid, how someone so unintelligent came to be in existence... for chrissake don't encourage it people!

Anyhow, it's interesting that so many have mentioned karma... I'm curious, for those who believe in karma, do you also believe in the existence of a deity or deities (ie. god)?

they didn't ever see the money, coulda been a big purse. She could be one of the people who carries around rare 1000 dollar bills a lot of what ifs

if it was me, i certainly hope i would return the money, though i know better than to say i would for sure. As a college kid with debt, that's quite a lot of change. But i've returned wallets i've found before (no i didn't take the cash), so i would think i would be able to return this one as well.

I would've concluded, that if someone can afford to misplace it, that someone does not really need it...
And WHY carry your life savings with you??? [Forrest] "Stupid is what stupid does..." [/Forrest]

Is it not possible she found a bank that could have given her better interest rates so she took everything out of her account?

I'd return it without another thought.
If the lady offered a reward, I'd refuse that as well and insist she bake me some cookies.
If there was 43 million in that purse, I'd be discussing it with my counselor in Acapulco so I could learn how to get over keeping it.

Anything with ID in there, like a purse, wallet? I HAVE returned it intact every time the opportunity has present itself.
karma is a cool thing, and 43K is really no big deal. it is just money, they print it round the clock.

I have no doubt in my mind I would have returned it. I have to walk in the door with my chin in the air, so if I have to lie steal or cheat to get it, it's not worth having.
I also commend those of you who answered in the same way. It is tough to be honest sometimes

They prosecuted a couple of people in, I believe it was Ohio, for doing that. Can you believe that?

Is it possible that electronic bank transfers exist?

They wouldn't hand you 43K in cash.

I could really use a windfall of 43K right about now.

Realistically I would take a small finders fee and return it anonymously.

All of you people saying you would return it would probally have a hard time doing it if this situation actualy happened to you. Most of you are saying that you would want it retured to you if you lost it. That is the stupidest thing i have ever heard. Anyone who carys around 43k in cash and then loses it deserves to be 43k poorer. I never carry around more cash than i need to just incase i misplace my wallet, and ive had the same wallet for about 12 years now. What doesnt get put in the bank gets put in my secret spot, and i hardly ever carry around over $50 in cash unless im plannin on buying something with cash.

Also if i found 43k in cash i would be like 99% sure it would be drug money and not some old ladys life savings. In which case the 43k is better off in my pocket then in the pocket of some bastard drug dealer.
Who the hell are you to judge that somebody should deserve to permanently lose something of their possession if they misplace it?

Stop trying to rationalize the fact that the money could very well be legitimately obtained.

1. I would have returned it.
2. If it was drug money, chances are it wouldn't be claimed. An off-duty cop here found a million bucks in a suitcase in the park when out walking his dog. Brought it in, it went unclaimed for 1 year, and he got to keep it (although the city did try to take it first). They think it was drug money that someone obviously didn't want to claim.
3. Yeah, she is a moron but she'll probably drown herself in a glass of water or something.

I would turn it in.
Disgusted at people who would just keep it, being completely selfish to other people's efforts.
If it was bill gates' wallet, I'd keep it
