I would probally keep it. First off this lady is a complete moron for carying around 43k in cash, and then she loses it?? All of you people saying you would return it would probally have a hard time doing it if this situation actualy happened to you. Most of you are saying that you would want it retured to you if you lost it. That is the stupidest thing i have ever heard. Anyone who carys around 43k in cash and then loses it deserves to be 43k poorer. I never carry around more cash than i need to just incase i misplace my wallet, and ive had the same wallet for about 12 years now. What doesnt get put in the bank gets put in my secret spot, and i hardly ever carry around over $50 in cash unless im plannin on buying something with cash.

Also if i found 43k in cash i would be like 99% sure it would be drug money and not some old ladys life savings. In which case the 43k is better off in my pocket then in the pocket of some bastard drug dealer.

I realized I never wrote what I would do in the situation.
I just really don't get why she had that much money in cash in the first place, and how could she just misplace it like that! Find it odd how the students didn't see the cash, because even in hundreds, that would be a hefty envelope!
I guess I'm the scum because I think I would have kept it at least until I heard something about it being lost and what circumstances...
Of course that is a lot of money and it would be hard to spend without getting nailed by IRS or something... Not like I could just go and buy a brand new car or anything like that, but I'm sure I could somehow manage .

Yeah, that's why I said "thought", I probably still wouldn't keep it. I think the keep range for me is somewhere between $30 - $200. That's not saying I would DEFINITELY keep it, that's just saying it's remotely possible.

I'd return it, since someone who had only accumulated $43k in life savings obviously needs it more than me. She must have been working as a burger-flipper or something to only have that much saved over her entire life. Hell, I've put that into my 401(k) over the course of three years or so, and I'm sure many here can say the same.

How can I possibly expect someone else to return my lost fortune if I wouldn't do the same for someone else's money?

agreed.....what goes around comes around

Who the hell are you to judge that somebody should deserve to permanently lose something of their possession if they misplace it?

Stop trying to rationalize the fact that the money could very well be legitimately obtained.

That much money would be tough to sit on anyways. Doesnt the IRS require notification when there is any transaction involving $10k of cash anyways? I mean you could deposit it over time into your account but its still rather fishy.

As for what I would do? Id like to say that I would return it but I dont think anyone really knows what they would do in that situation until they were presented with it in real life.

I would have kept it. Anyone stupid enough to be carrying $43k in their purse is either A) Doing something illegal or B) Deserving of a rough life lesson...a forty-three thousand dollar lesson.

Who needs to deposit it? Need some spare cash every once and awhile? You've got it. I think it's really interesting that most of you are saying you'd return it without thought. I would like to agree with you, and sitting here now I say I would.. but if I were actually holding 43,000 dollars I don't know what I'd do. Again, I'd like to think I would return it.. but I can't say exactly what I'd do in that situation.

i would hold onto it for a day and treasure the amount of cash that i have. but the next morning, sigh and return the purse. if you lost something, you would want it returned to you if found.

You can easily assimilate $43k into your own assets if you play it smart (ie no lump sum deposits into your local bank).

Foriegn banks are also more than willing to accept your money.
