what would i have done? I would not have left the parking lot. I know tow truck operators are scum so no reason to tempt them.

Agreed, except for the tow truck operator scum part. Sure, sometimes they are, but they don't just lurk parking lots waiting for opportunity - they're *called* by someone at the store - at least they are here.

And has already been stated, they respond to a call from someone there AND THAT PERSON receives a kickback from the tow truck driver.

Ask anyone in San Antonio Texas about JerDan towing. They've had a racket going with SAPD for 10+ years now. There are hundreds of independent tow truck operators in SA. Funny how every single wreck in a city of 2.5 Million people gets towed by the same company, all the time, every time, eh?

Tow truck companies and the people they employ are the scum of the earth. They will ransack your vehicle after they tow it. They will note your address off the insurance/registration card in the glove box, come to your house and steal your stereo or the whole damn car. They should all perish in a fire.

How? I parked and made a purchase at McDonalds. Doesn't that allow me to park there for one hour? Or is it true that if I leave the property I am no longer allowed to park there?

You left the property. The parking is for CURRENT customers, not PAST customers. They aren't running a pay lot whose cost for parking is a small purchase. They are running a business and have parking available for customers who choose to eat inside.

I see your point and agree with you (and the other guy who agreed with you) 50%.

The parking lot IS for customers. If the OP purchased a twenty-cent COFFEE and has a VALID RECEIPT, he is a customer. The sign says "For Customers Only." It doesn't stipulate how much money you must spend nor does it specify a time limit.

A customer is a customer. You either HAVE a receipt, or you don't. I sue their ass off for false advertisement, breach of contract, harassment, mental torment and whatever else I could get away with.

OK: I didn't see that there WAS a sign that stated "One hour only." I missed that.

Personally, it's still bllshit. What if they are busy and it takes 30 minutes to get your food?

When you are not on the premises, you are not a customer. It is really that simple. I'm not saying I've never parked somewhere and run into more than one store while parked, I'm just saying that if I had gotten towed, I'd be angry at myself for being stupid, not the tow truck driver or the store.

And what if it takes 30 minutes to get your food? You still have 30 minutes to eat, take it with you, or choose to go somewhere else to order food. Who on earth would stand in line for 30 minutes to get McDonalds' food? Bleh.

Anecdotals FTL!

I've had nothing but good experiences with tow truck drivers. The guy who picked up myself, my mom and sister in MD when my mom's van broke down was a real nice guy, and he only charged us the "in-state" rate instead of the "out of state" rate. Same with the guy who picked up my two broken Z cars when I had to get rid of them, who was also the same guy who picked up the truck to take it in for warranty work when the parking brake exploded and locked up the rear wheel. Granted, they both worked for the same company, but in all cases we were treated fairly by them, with non-gouging rates.
