I play at 1920x1080. Most of the time I dont care and so do not usually bother to check if my graphic settings use anti-aliasing. When I bought the card, I had thought that it would enable me to play recent games at 60fps. Unfortunately it has trouble with my favorite games such as The Witcher 2 and Metro 2033. I think it hovers at 30-50 fps for those games. I am rather let down that it cant even hold a rather old game such as Crysis Warhead stable at 60fps.

Assuming the following limitations, which graphic card would you upgrade to were you in my position :

- Time is not critical. Willing to wait.
- Not a very heavy gamer. Game about 10% of the time.
- 1920x1080 resolution. 23 inch monitor
- 100 to 200 usd budget plus whatever I got from selling the 6870
- 6870 was bought around July 2011
- Prefers RPG and strategy. Play FPS at times.
- CPU is Phenom II X4 955 BE with 8 GB ram
- Looking forward to playing : ME3, Bioshock Infinite, Max Payne 3 and Metro Last Light

Being on a shoestring budget I just dont see the value in upgrading to any of the currently available cards, probably would better spending them on SSD.

Buying another one would be the most cost effective option, not sure if your motherboard has 2 PCI-E 16 slots.

Lowering some settings would really enable such fps.

My 2gb gtx560 non ti in BF3 in order for me to get playable 1920x1080 ultra gameplay i had to shut off motion blur, drop deferred aa to low and shut off msaa.

Drop some settings and wait for something worthwhile would be the best thing.

If you want to upgrade now, then IMO the only worthwhile upgrade that will net an appreciable performance gain is either a gtx580 for $450 or an hd7970 for $550. You are better off waiting a few months. Nvidia will have (hopefully) launched their 28nm Kepler video cards and AMD will also have released more models of their hd7000 cards.

You should definitely wait for new releases. I never understand people who have fairly top tier video cards and somehow want to upgrade when there are new releases on the horizon. A 6870 is pretty damn fast, why would you even need anything faster. Just lower your details slightly and bam, more fps.

Anyways, dont upgrade when 7 series are being released as well as new nvidia product lines as well. At the very least, it will drive prices down on older gen cards. You said you dont even game much anymore so why do you even need a 6870?

I dont game much anymore and I run a $30 GT 430 for now and am perfectly fine with that. I can even play Skyrim on it as well as every other game I play fine, as well as stream blu-ray, dvd, etc through hdmi. I am waiting for new releases before considering an upgrade.

PS: You should upgrade to intel with an 2500k or similar. Youd see some performance increase there.....

A second HD 6870 will put you well over 60FPS at all those games if you have the extra PCIe slot and your mobo supports Crossfire. Check my thread.

Given your budget i'd stay put and lower some settings to raise your fps.

You should also lower settings and check for fps improvment in those games to see if you are CPU bottlnecked before hitting the frames you want. If you find this is the case then a GPU upgrade will do you no good.

If you have to have better FPS, make sure your CPU will get you the FPS you want and then consider putting more $$$ behind your GPU upgrade. nVidia 580 or AMD 7950 are the GPU's you should consider as those will provide significant more power than the 6870.

The 6870 is solid for 1080P at medium settings no AA across most games.

3rd... if your motherboard supports Crossfire, 2 HD6870's are very fast indeed and should hold you for a while at that resolution. I ran 2 6870's for a year, I was able to max everything out at 1920 x 1200 and microstutering was barely noticeable in only a couple of games. That varies by user of course.

Overclock your existing 6870 and CPU if you aren't already. If that doesn't do the trick, reduce settings and save up until the next generation of cards comes out.

Alright, I guess I will be on holding pattern for the moment.
I am not a fan of multi-gpu solution. The noise is a deal-breaker.
In any case, my mobo and PSU wont be able to support it.

Thanks for your help.

If keeping Warhead at a stable 60 FPS with the settings turned up is what you consider acceptable, then you're not going to be happy with anything other than sli/crossfire. Even the 7970 can't do it.

^ This.

extra 6870 for you, means 2x6870 in CF > 580 by good margin.
The only other single GPU card faster would be a 7970 and them be expensive.

So in short, if you want more GPU performance, you ll need to double up... might as well be the 6870 you do it with, time to crossfire.

Also, consider overclocking your CPU (could be whats holding you back), or getting a 2500k or some such + overclock.

+1 for adding a second 6870. Been running crossfired 6870'es for a year now. It's like night and day in games like Metro2033 and Witcher2 compared to a single 6870.
