Got this Last week

Abit AI7
P4 2.8C (Spark 7+ cooler)
Geil PC-4000 (2.5-4-4-7)

First i rosted a PSU trying to OC this system, For all others that dont know a PSU is worth 100 bucks if ya want something stable. (Had to buy from Best Buy {Antec 430} )

But now ive got the machine running at 3.3 Ghz
the frontside is running at 230 mhz

No errors running prime

CPU runs at 37C at idle and about 50C full load when the room is hot

What ya think ?????

When it is pushed any farther with out bumping up the CPU voltage it wont boot. Im trying to say away from uping the voltage since i only have an air cooler.

Spark 7 isn't all that much better then the stock HSF combo - A high end cooler might get you up to the 250MHz range, but that is dependant on the particular stepping - I have an M0 that went to 250 on air and runs at 266 on H20. 230 is still nothing to sneeze at with that setup.

That's almost a 20% overclock, which is about average. Not bad at all for your first overclocking attempt.

It's not "unsafe" to increase the voltage with air cooling. A 5% increase in voltage is pretty safe, since I believe the CPU manufacturers allow for a 10% fluctuation in voltage at it's rated clock speed without effecting the operation of the CPU. A 5% increase would put you right around 1.62 volts... you could even just go up to 1.600 if you wanted to be conservative. You could probably at least get to 3.4 GHz, which would make your ~$200 processor perform better than a >$400 processor. (better since your FSB will be higher than a stock 3.4 GHz Pentium 4)

Wont that make the Cpu run alot hotter?

I get spooked when it comes to the CPU voltage. I cant afford another, but i want to get the most out of my money.

2.8C's are good chips. I have had 2, a D1 stepping and now an M0. I've run them both @ 1.65v (MBM5: 1.60-1.62v) with no problems. If you want to keep it on the safe side, run them at a maximum of 1.6v, and make sure you monitor your voltage to watch out for overvolting (not typically a charactistic of Abit boards though). You should be able to hit 240FSB with a little more voltage. If you are concerned about temp/voltage....spend $30 on a Zalman 7000-Cu, and you will be fine.

Congrats to fellow-first-time-overclocker dillydobbs! I have been trying to do the same over the last couple of days. I had it go up to 3.6 GHz but was unstable (actually crashed right after Windows loaded up). I am pretty sure it's my cheap RAM which I have heard is not good for over-clocking, period. Waiting for a good deal on Corsair XMS.... :brokenheart:
